Kate Rockwell Instagram – Today is my first Mother’s Day away from my little kid, and closing day of Regency Girls. I’ve spent all morning thinking about the sacrifices you have to make when you become a parent, and the sacrifices you have to make when you’re an actor, and how they overlap in so many ways. I miss my baby so much today, but I also get to be fully present for my RG family after all the insane work we’ve put into our “baby”. It’s that whole yin and yang thing.
Raising a kid and building new art are so similar, actually. They require every ounce of energy you have, and then some more. You want to cry from frustration and pride on a daily basis. They make you insane and you love them fiercely. And you dream BIG about what they can become, about the possibility and potential. I feel wildly fortunate that I have a life full of both of those loves.
I am also tired. 🥱 😂
There are people who will think that I’m not being a good mother to my kid by working in a business that requires me to be away from her. But I know that I’m teaching her about passion, about following her heart, and about how limitless her life can be. My heart physically hurts when I’m away from her, but I also love what I do, and I’m grateful to my family and friends who help keep her safe and loved while I’m away. Village, my friends. It takes a big one.
Also, let me be clear-WORKING MOMS HAVE SUPERPOWERS. I have always been a productive person but I NEVER knew how much I could do with 16 (let’s be honest, 18) hours in a day. And if you want to be emotionally and physically present for all of it, you just…figure it out!
So for those of you who think we abandoned our careers when we had kids…let me sit you down, make you lunch, help you draw a picture of how wrong you are, and then give you a hug on my way out the door to my show, where I’ll entertain the shit out of you. 😘
