In ‘We Met in December’, my character Annie’s most treasured possession is her grandmother’s sewing machine. She holds a secret dream to return to creating beautiful things with her hands.
Much of this year for me has already been about re-weaving (those of you following my Ireland journey know that is a huge part of the work we were doing there with @sacredsistersretreats – reweaving ancestral patterns that have corrupted the roots).
My final day on the film was this scene — Annie sewing with her grandmother’s machine. It’s meant to be tender, resolved, connected and ultimately life-changing for her.
Two days before filming this scene, my sister, who wasn’t even aware I was working on a movie, texts me out of the blue with this question — “Any chance you would like to have Grandma’s sewing machine?”
Yes.
Yes I would.
On a purely mystical level, how could I say no?
I learned so much from revisiting this part of my heritage. The women in my maternal line were/are accomplished sewers, artisans and crafters, weaving their love through paper, paint and pieces of thread. I, too, was taught to sew at a young age but moved away from it in my late twenties. To revisit the softness in my lineage and be reminded of the love and beauty that can be woven not just with our words, but with our hands?

Thank you Grandma Bea, for sending me your sewing machine to help me remember. Thank you to my sister for following the call. Thank you to the ancestors for helping me re-weave the threads of my mind and for reminding me about my roots.
And thank you to @hallmarkchannel for allowing me to continue to tell women’s stories in such a loving and wide-reaching way.
