A big break comes around once in a lifetime. For me it was the film, The Brothers McMullen, which came out in 1995 and won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance that year (thank you again, Robert Redford). This funny, honest, slice of life movie by the unknown filmmaker, Eddie Burns, was shot at his family’s house on Long Island, whenever he could afford film stock, over 8 months, on weekends. And now, 30 years later, The Family McMullen is back! There is nothing quite like being able to return to your roots, with the same gratitude and joy as the first time around, when we were just doing it for the love of storytelling. And now this film carries that same love: for storytelling, family, and life well lived. And I am left as grateful to my dear friend and brother for life, Eddie Burns, as I was over 30 years ago. #TheFamilyMcMullen will be in theaters October 15 for one day only! I hope you’ll join us for a walk down memory lane, and for new beginnings. ☘️ #TheFamilyMcMullen #TheBrothersMcMullen
30 years ago a young filmmaker named Eddie Burns cornered Robert Redford in an elevator and thrust a grainy VHS copy of his mostly finished film into Redford’s hands, asking him to please take a look. The film was The Brothers McMullen which went on to win the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 1995. This also resulted in my “big break” and the start of my career. Years later I got to hear this same story from Redford who said he had created the Festival associated with Sundance in 1985, specifically to lift up and nurture independent film, and the voices of independent filmmakers. He always had a deep belief in the power of art, and a deep curiosity about everyone’s story, which is why he took this kid’s videotape and actually watched it. Bob became an icon and mentor to me, both in the times I had the great fortune to work with him at the Sundance Institute and on various environmental and arts related projects such as his National Arts Policy Roundtable where this photo was taken in 2015, or when I was simply watching him from a distance as we all did, while he seamlessly and with the utmost dedication and perseverance integrated his acting work with his life’s work as an advocate and philanthropist. Bob’s legacy of Sundance merged art, the natural world, and community into one entity of betterment for storytelling, the environment, and the world. He was and will always be one of my greatest inspirations. Here’s to you Bob, with deepest gratitude. @sundanceorg
A couple weeks ago I had the immense honor to speak at @helpinghandhome in Austin, TX, an organization that has been around for 135 years serving children who have experienced abuse, neglect and abandonment by offering them ongoing safe haven, therapeutic recovery care, and possibility for adoption. I am so blown away by the commitment to advocacy for children and families of this organization. I want to see @helpinghandhome opening all over the country until we finally get to the great day where we have alleviated this kind of child suffering! And not for nothing, but it was great to see my old pal Kyle Chandler out to support these kids and families, and of course the great @coachmackbrown! Let’s do this!!

30 years after ‘The Brothers McMullen’ became an indie hit in 1995, writer, director and star Ed Burns is back with the heartfelt sequel ‘The Family McMullen,’ which will be streaming on HBO Max on Dec. 5. “Connie [Britton] and I were talking one day and said, ‘We’ve got to work together again.’ I told her I was thinking about a Brothers McMullen sequel, and she said, ‘Absolutely!”” Burns tells PEOPLE of his original cast mate, and of the sequel’s origin story.
