Day 4 of Science Mischief! Courtesy of Dr Ralph Science Elf 🤓 Follow along for 12 days of Science Mischief 🎄 📝HOW TO🧪 Color your elf on paper (I used cardstock) Place it inside a ziplock bag (I used snack size but any size will do) Use a permanent marker to outline your tree on top of the bag. Fill a large vase with water. Dip your ziplock bag into the vase and look at it from above (you can look at it from the front as well, but you’ll need to turn your ziplock bag to see the same effect) 🎄THE SCIENCE🤓 We see color by LIGHT reflecting off of it and bouncing into our eye. LIGHT can change SPEED depending on what it is moving through (like water, air, plastic, etc) When light CHANGES speed it also changes DIRECTION (it “bends”) The light from the elf needs to move through PLASTIC (the ziplock bag) WATER AIR to get to our eyes That PLASTIC is the special sauce for this experiment because it slows down light so much that it BENDS away from your eye. That is why the elf seems to DISSAPPEAR!! #elfontheshelfideas #elfontheshelf
Day 3 of science mischief! Let’s make a snowman toot ☃️💨🤭 Follow for 12 days of science mischief 😉 📝HOW TO 1️⃣Put 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a Ziploc bag (I recommend the name brand ones! Off brand can sometimes have invisible holes at the seems) 2️⃣Put 1 cup vinegar in a different Ziploc bag – don’t zip it up, and place it in your bag of baking soda 3️⃣ zip the baking soda bag TIGHT and tape it onto your snowman 🫨NOW SHAKE 🎄🧪 THE SCIENCE 🤓 Baking soda is a base. Vinegar is an acid. When you mix the two together, you kickstart an acid-base chemical reaction that creates carbon dioxide bubbles. 🫧Those bubbles build and build and build, which means the pressure builds and builds and builds. 💨Once the bag can’t take the pressure anymore -> it toots!! Releasing all the gas. ⚠️do this one in a container in case any liquid spills out (how embarrassing for the snowman 😳) #elfontheshelfideas #elfontheshelf

Day 5 of Science Mischief (from Dr. Ralph the Science Elf) 🤓 Follow for 12 days of Science Mischief 🎄🧪 📝HOW TO🤓 Place skittles in a circle around a plate Add hot water slowly to the center so that it halfway covered the candy. (I put a full mug of water in the microwave for 60s) Wait 60 seconds. 🤓 THE SCIENCE ☝🏼 This demonstrates DIFFUSION – when particles move from an area of HIGH concentration to an area of LOW concentration. 🤔What’s moving? 🙋🏻♀️The sugar! (And the food coloring along with it). It’s like how a candle slowly diffuses perfume throughout a room. The sugar is slowly moving through the water, working to spread the sugar. 🤔Why don’t the colors mix together? 🙋🏻♀️Well if you look at one “lane” of color, the lane next to it already has sugar. And what do we know about diffusion? The sugar wants to move to an area of LOW concentration. So it’ll keep moving throughout the water without mixing with the sugar lane next to it until the water is filled with sugar 🙌🏼 #elfontheshelfideas #ElfOnTheShelf

Day 6 of Science Mischief! Follow along for 12 days of science mischief with Dr. Ralph Science Elf. 📝HOW TO 🧪 Fill a glass with water. Take out the inside of a yellow highlighter and squeeze the liquid in. Fill up the glass the rest of the way with oil (doesn’t matter which kind) SNOW: you can either use salt or crush up alka seltzer for a more bubbly effect. ☝🏼TIP: if you use alka seltzer make sure there are some bigger chunks in there so they sink easily ❄️Bring to a dark place, Turk on a black light, and sprinkle the snow in! 🧪 THE SCIENCE 🤓 Yellow highlighter contains fluorescent chemicals. When you shine ultraviolet light (which has more energy than a regular flashlight) it EXCITES those fluorescent chemicals and they RELEASE that energy as GLOWING light! ❄️The SNOW: 🧂If you used SALT – it sank bc it is more DENSE than water, dragging down some oil with it. But once it dissolved in the water the oil rose back up to the top! 🫧If you used ALKA SELTZER – this contains an acid and a base and when combined with water it creates carbon dioxide bubbles!
