📝HOW TO🤓
Place skittles in a circle around a plate
Add hot water slowly to the center so that it halfway covered the candy. (I put a full mug of water in the microwave for 60s)
Wait 60 seconds.
🤓 THE SCIENCE ☝🏼
This demonstrates DIFFUSION – when particles move from an area of HIGH concentration to an area of LOW concentration.
🤔What’s moving?
🙋🏻♀️The sugar! (And the food coloring along with it).
It’s like how a candle slowly diffuses perfume throughout a room. The sugar is slowly moving through the water, working to spread the sugar.
🤔Why don’t the colors mix together?
🙋🏻♀️Well if you look at one “lane” of color, the lane next to it already has sugar. And what do we know about diffusion? The sugar wants to move to an area of LOW concentration. So it’ll keep moving throughout the water without mixing with the sugar lane next to it until the water is filled with sugar 🙌🏼
