The weather didn’t always play ball, but we still managed the full set – modern cities, peaceful temples, cherry blossoms at just the right moment, and a pleasing amount of crazy quirkiness.
The kids were brilliant – part travel guides, part shepherds – while Ian and I trailed behind trying to work out which way was north. Spoiler: usually the wrong one.
Never quite mastered the subway. But if a journey doesn’t involve three changes, a u-turn, and a heated family discussion, did you even go to Japan?
