Kimberly Daugherty Instagram – This is the question I get asked the most, by far: Why did you move your family from the USA to Italy? There were a lot of reasons, but the main reason was because we wanted both of our sons to have the same opportunities in life. Brant and Wilder became dual citizens of USA and Italy end of 2024, from an application that was submitted in 2022 (before Aero was born). After they received their recognition, we started getting the paperwork together so that Aero could get his citizenship as well. However, end of March 2025 (about 1 week before we would have submitted all of Aero’s paperwork), Italy changed the law and it looked like the only way for Aero to receive his citizenship was for us to establish residency in Italy for two years. This is what got us talking seriously about moving. Prior to that, it was always, “Maybe we’ll retire in Italy one day… or maybe we’ll get a place to summer in Italy.” But that law change is what really got us moving. As an Italian citizen, Wilder can live/work/study freely anywhere in the European Union (27 countries!) and it was important to us that both of our sons had that benefit. Now, the law was amended, so it looks like Aero can get his citizenship as long as we file before March 2026, but at that point, we had already made the decision to move and were excited for a new chapter! We’re still working on getting Aero recognized (which has new hurtles now that we’re here), but we’re glad we decided to choose adventure!
