Today is World AIDS Day, which arrives with equal measures of heartbreak and hope. Fortunately, medical advances have made normal lives possible for people who have the resources to pay for and access the required medications. Tragically, cuts to the CDC’s Division of HIV Prevention will lead to dramatic rises in infections, deaths, and costs. This doesn’t have to happen.
Here, I am delivering a check to The Foundation for AIDS Research, formerly known as @amfAR, singing a song, and knowing there is still so much more work to be done. We cannot honor World AIDS Day without paying tribute to my dear friend Dame Elizabeth Taylor. Elizabeth was the first globally recognized celebrity HIV/AIDS activist, relentlessly pursuing an AIDS-free world before starting the @ElizabethTaylorAIDSFoundation. I love Elizabeth for a million reasons, and this is surely one of the most special.
In these images, you’ll see Elizabeth and me raising funds for the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, and the two of us with Rock Hudson before his diagnosis became public. Dear God, Elizabeth and I loved Rock so much.
