I wasn’t supposed to fall in love. On December 12th, I heard about a pregnant mama dog scheduled to be euthanized. I made some calls. Helen Woodward Animal Center stepped in. That same day she gave birth to 14 puppies. Twelve survived. On the 31st, Bear and I went to visit… and somehow I left fostering four of them. Four became two. And I fell hard for brindle baby Roscoe. The past few days I’ve been a hot, crying mess… trying to rearrange my life in my head so I could keep him. But I’m leaving the country for 2.5 months. I haven’t slept properly in nearly two weeks. There was no way to do my job well, be a good mom, and raise newborn puppies… no matter how much I love him. It was time for my to say goodbye. And then my neighbor told me they’re adopting him. I burst into tears again. But this time… from relief. I still get to see him grow up. He gets a forever home. Adoption is magic. 🤍🐾 My heart is wrecked. And full. Roscoe was almost gone before he ever had a chance. So many others still are. If you’ve been thinking about getting a dog, please visit your local shelter or a rescue like Helen Woodward Animal Center first. Love is sitting in a kennel somewhere right now, waiting to meet you. Every day, shelters are inundated with wonderful animals who need homes. Please always adopt and never buy, and demand our local governments launch vigorous, mandatory spaying and neutering. Roscoe, his mama, and his siblings thank you. 🐾❤️ @hwac #AdoptDontShop

A heartfelt thank you to our friend Alicia Silverstone 💛 Actress, author, and lifelong animal advocate, Alicia has shown us what true compassion looks like. In December, a pregnant mama dog was just 24 hours away from being euthanized in an overcrowded shelter when Alicia helped bring urgent attention to her situation. With time running out, Helen Woodward Animal Center stepped in, making a determined rescue trip that changed everything. As our team was making the trip up north to rescue her, the mama dog, lovingly named Noel, gave birth to fourteen puppies, but only twelve of them made it, each one a true holiday miracle. Recently, Alicia visited the Center to check in on Noel and the puppies she helped save, seeing firsthand how far they’ve come. The visit turned into something even more special when Alicia fell in love all over again and opened her home to four of the puppies, to foster them as they continue their journey toward forever families. Alicia’s commitment to animals in need goes far beyond a single rescue. Her continued advocacy helps bring attention to the countless pregnant dogs and vulnerable litters who urgently need help, and reminds us what’s possible when compassion meets action. “We have been fortunate to meet some amazing and dazzlingly famous people at the Center, but very rarely do we meet one whose heart so sincerely belongs to the animals. Alicia Silverstone is one of those rare people who truly wants to help and make a difference,” said Jessica Gercke, Public Relations Director at the Center. We are deeply grateful to Alicia for standing up for the voiceless and for being part of Noel and her puppies’ incredible rescue story. Because of her, more lives were saved, and more happy endings are just beginning 🐾 Starting this weekend some of these amazing puppies will be available for adoption! Visit animalcenter.org/pet-adoption/adoptable-dogs/ for the most up to date list of available pets! 🐶
