Well… Ten years ago today I founded #LOVEOURGIRLS stating: “I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PASSION FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS, A HOPE TO SEE THEM FUNCTION ON THE SAME PLAYING FIELD AS MEN AND HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES AND APPROPRIATE PROTECTIONS. I WANT TO BE MORE THAN AN ACTRESS AND STORYTELLER BUT AN ADVOCATE FOR WOMEN, NOT ONLY IN UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIES BUT ALL OVER THE WORLD.” That was the spark that ignited #LoveOurGirls. The spark that had me rededicating my birthday, #ValentinesDay, to loving our girls and women around the world, bringing awareness to their plights and celebrating the courage of many who fight for change. Looking back over these ten years, I am overwhelmed by the inspiring organizations, activists, leaders and warriors we have had the honor to amplify. A decade of emphasizing “love” as a verb, not a noun, for women worldwide. Today, I am still seeking to #LoveOurGirls all these years later, to rededicate my efforts to women and girls across the world, amplifying their voices and advocating for them. In the #LoveOurGirls spirit of highlighting the girls we love, I’d be remiss not to spotlight the woman who has remained my constant inspiration over these ten years, and whose example has been the most powerful and edifying for me throughout my adult life: our former First Lady, @MichelleObama. Her grace, humanity, leadership, and integrity have guided me in becoming a better activist, listener, and woman. Her courage has opened many doors for women and girls, speaking up for what and whom she believes in.
