I wrote “Pieces of You” when I was 18. To help me hold up a mirror to prejudice.

The song intentionally uses harsh language—sexism, homophobia, antisemitism, bullying—because I wanted listeners to hear the kinds of things people actually say to each other, and to confront how fear and judgment get projected onto others.

At the heart of the song is a question I was wrestling with:

Why do we sometimes hate people who reflect parts of ourselves?

Why do we reject in others the very pieces of ourselves we haven’t learned to accept or understand yet.

I’m curious- what did you think when you first heard this song? | Posted on 14/Mar/2026 21:12:19
