Receiving the Courage Award from the Womens Cancer Research Fund means so much to me… but as I said in my speech last night: I do not deserve it! If there is anyone I know who is an example of courage in the face of cancer, it is my brave and bad*ss cancer surviving mother. When cancer first entered her life 24 years ago, she faced it with a strength, grace, and determination. Every single day, her fight continues to teach me what courage really looks like. So I accept this award with deep gratitude… but only because I dedicate it to Valerie Washington. The night belonged to her! AND ALSO!!!! having this honor be presented by our fellow Bronx sister @jlo somehow made the night even MORE special. THANK YOU JEN – what an insane surprise!!!! LOVE YOU. To every person facing cancer and to your loved ones, you inspire me. I am sending you prayers of love and healing and faith.

The Price of Freedom. On International Women’s Day, Pomellato for Women brings economic abuse into focus: financial control that leaves no bruises, yet can strip women of dignity, autonomy, and the power to choose their own life. Voices from culture, sport, entrepreneurship, and civil society join @janefonda in a choral video grounded in research commissioned by Pomellato and conducted by SDA Bocconi School of Management. The findings are clear: economic abuse is rarely a single episode—it’s a pattern that grows quietly over time. It shows up as restriction, sabotage, and exploitation—when money is monitored, opportunities are undermined, and resources are taken to reinforce power. Recognizing it is the first step to breaking it. Pomellato continues to support @cadmi_org, Milan’s first anti-violence center for women, and @freefromdotorg, the Kering Foundation’s L.A. partner dedicated to long-term financial security for survivors. #Pomellato #PomellatoForWomen #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2026 #adv Director: @igorinthewild Executive Producer: @beautyineverythingproductions Post Production: @paaablo Los Angeles DoP: @dpjmw5 Los Angeles Photographer: @sarahmccologan Milan DoP: @fedeteoldi Milan Photographer: @giovannimocchetti

Kerry Washington is no longer just starring in stories, she’s shaping them. The 2026 Black Women in Hollywood honoree is embracing an era rooted in introspection, courage, and creative authority. In her memoir Thicker Than Water, Washington revealed that the man who raised her was not her biological father—a truth that disrupted the narrative she’d been handed at birth. “That was a turning point,” she tells ESSENCE. “Taking a journey of self-discovery… was going to be a threat and a challenge to the script that had been handed to me.” Off script meant therapy. Reckoning. Choosing curiosity over comfort. Since then, Washington has leaned deeper into storytelling across film, television, and podcasts through her production company, Simpson Street. It also meant choosing bold work. Hiring the directors. Greenlighting the stories. Expanding who gets to lead and who gets to tell it. Fourteen years after first being honored at Black Women in Hollywood, Washington is living proof of how power, purpose and authorship can redefine the industry and the self.
