While feeding a pasture today, Ladd noticed a cow by herself in the distance. She’d given birth yesterday. As he started feeding the cattle, the cow came over and joined the herd. She was very engorged and didn’t have her calf with her. So while the cattle were eating, he drove back to the spot where he’d spotted her earlier. Fortunately, he found the calf, who hadn’t nursed at all and was too weak to follow its mama. The calf was freezing, so Ladd loaded her up and let her warm up in the feed truck while he fed a couple more pastures. Since the mama was so swollen, the calf wouldn’t have been able to nurse—so Ree and Ladd took the baby to their garage for a bit. Next, the guys saddled their horses, rode out in the snow, roped the mama cow, and milked her so they could get her swelling down and also collect the colostrum—so essential for the calf’s survival and health. Ladd and Ree fed it to the calf through the rest of the day and she’ll spend the night in the garage since it’s so cold. Tomorrow when the sun comes up, Ladd will try to get her back with her mama. 🙏❤️
What happens when a baby calf gets the zoomies.
Bessie-Lou update. She sleeps in the barn and Ladd built her a pen that I can see from my office so she can enjoy the sunshine during the day. She thinks she’s a puppy, and she thinks the driveway is a lake.
Alex sent me this photo this morning. I had just FaceTimed with Sofia an hour ago and now she’s watching me on TV. I know babies grow up with all kinds of screens and digital factors around them, but I wonder what she is thinking when she’s watching this!! (“Why isn’t Ree Ree singing our special songs??”) We live in a wild world!! 😂
Calf update from Drummond Ranch. Ladd tried to get her back on her mama the next morning, but the calf was weak and after a few hours, she still couldn’t get up by herself to nurse. So Ladd and Ree had to take her back to their heated garage to warm her up again and try to get her to eat more. The calf had a few hours where she looked like she wasn’t going to make it (she’d been born in the winter storm and had a rough start), but after the mama’s colostrum, 2 bags of colostrum replacer, and the first round of milk replacer, she started pepping up a bit. Now she’s in a warm spot in the old barn where she’ll stay for the next few cold days. It’s highly unlikely she’ll be able to nurse her mama (the mama would have to be gathered and milked down again) but Ladd isn’t ruling out trying one last time. But for now, the calf is alive and getting stronger every day. 🙏 Shout out to all our fellow ranchers and farmers who have undoubtedly had their share of extra work (including bottle calves) over the past week. 🙌
Highlights from our interpretive Frozen kitchen dance last weekend. Watch Sofia!! 🥹 (This wore me smooth out, btw. We did the whole song. 😂)
Just don’t call me Granny.
Rollin’ out the hay carpet!!
Hope you enjoy the new episode of “Drummond Ranch” that just went live this morning. That work day began with friendly banter as usual—and please notice Shelby and Rusty at the end of this clip. 😂 Why does she always eat his ears. Comment “Cowboy” and I’ll DM you the link to the new episode! 🤠 (You can also subscribe at YouTube.com/DrummondRanchTV)
February 22, 1975. (I’m not saying how many) years ago today! My siblings and I all got baptized together at our Episcopal church that morning. My mom says there was a huge snowstorm that day; of course, that didn’t keep her from throwing us in her Oldsmobile and driving to church. ⛪️😂 Baby Betsy almost didn’t make it into the photo! Fr. Evans and Fr. Fellows, I’ll always remember them. Also, what was I looking at? I was easily distracted, even then.
Just found these pics I took of Ladd chopping ice three weeks ago. (Has it been that long since our winter storm?) Fortunately, these kinds of freezing temps—low enough that the ponds freeze—don’t last for too terribly long each winter. But just as important as the feed and the hay are when it comes to getting cattle through the storm, is the chopping of ice in the ponds. They have to have daily access to water! Ironically, Ladd and I went 12 days without running water during this same cold snap (along with many other rural residents in the area). Made for some interesting days, and our bottle calf got to drink milk replacer mixed with bottled spring water there for a week or two! 😂 Anyway, water’s back on now, ponds are all thawed, and lemme tell ya, I have ZERO complaints!

This is just a sampling of the new vlog we just posted on Drummond Ranch YouTube. 🤠 Today’s vlog is a much more in-depth glimpse at the several-hour period during January’s winter storm. From listening in on Ladd’s phone call with Cowboy Josh to up-close peeks at what cattle feed looks like (and tastes like? 😂 I’m weird), this episode has a little bit of everything. 🐮❄️ Bessie Lou had such a pitiful start. 😢 Find the video in the bio OR comment “vlog” and I’ll DM you the link to watch it! 😘
The “official” first day of spring isn’t too far away, but it’s already feeling sunnier! ☀️ I just launched my new spring collection at QVC, and I just love every piece. Very wearable, denim-based, with cute blouses, essential knit tops, lightweight sweaters, and gorgeous dresses. I first launched my “Ree by The Pioneer Woman” line at QVC last fall, and it’s been such a wonderful journey so far! This new collection is my favorite yet, and I hope you find some things you love. ❤️🫶 Comment “Q” and I’ll DM you the link!
