A week now since the staff, volunteers and inhabitants of the Red Cross Refugee Centre in Turin, Italy, opened their gates and their hearts to me. What could have been soul-destroying histories of slaughtered families, slave labour camps and sex trafficking were shared only to show me how far they’d come and how far they intended to go: learning languages, mastering trades and embracing their futures as valuable members of the community that had embraced them. A week during which their gratitude and optimism has infused my every activity and encounter. Get involved if you can, where you can, however you can. Another day in paradise.
Reminds me of the hotel we all stayed in making Dragonheart in Slovakia that had been rapidly built not long after the iron curtain came down, probably just to accommodate us. Apart from paper thin walls and a room service menu consisting mostly of deep fried balls of gristle and shreds of brown, wilting lettuce, every room had a phone, but there was only one line for the building. Took everyone months to work out why we could only make the occasional, rare call. I have to confess now that I realised early on, but continued to hijack the line for dial-up access to the newly born web and stay on all night exploring absolutely fuck-all forever.
