22 years ago, I did Fire which sowed the seeds of this much needed conversation, that has somewhat found its culmination. In these last two decades I have engaged with many people on this subject and the reactions have ranged from extreme prejudice and vitriol to people who have been shocked and helpless with this archaic law that criminalized homosexuality in this day and age. In times when we should be fighting hate, lynchings, abuse and discrimination, we were stopping people from loving.
This was long overdue. Rarely does a judgement so clearly address a historic wrong, a great new day for individual rights and freedoms in India. This is a human rights issue and impacts us all. I am glad that we can continue to have faith in our judicial system. Freedom to live and love is, and must be, for all.

Soon, I will be going to the @TIFF_net for Manto’s North American premiere. There, I have been invited to participate in the movement called #ShareHerJourney to champion female storytellers and push gender parity in films. I will be sharing my perspective along with 6 incredible women at the public rally being hosted by the festival. This is the second year of a five-year commitment by TIFF to prioritize inclusion and encourage solidarity amongst all women in front of and behind the camera.
Individually, we are one little drop. Together we are an entire ocean. And there is no better time than now to turn the tide!
