No, I’m not Charlie fuckin’ Chaplin. Being a large unit I really hate the idea of, even subconsciously, being assessed as merely a fat take on whatever I’m dressed as. So, whenever I receive an invite to a costume/themed party, I give myself the limitation of only dressing as historically fat characters or figures. 1920s themed party? That leaves me Al Capone or Oliver Hardy. Circus theme? Bearded lady. Royalty? Henry VII. Santa Claus. The Fat Controller. You get the idea. Why, even for a second, allow someone to relegate me to the status of an imposter? To internally accuse me of pretending to be something I’m far too fat to ever pass off convincingly? Of course, I know full well that everyone can and should wear whatever they want and in reality so few people would think the way I’m describing. However, a lifetime of gaining and losing weight, both in the public eye and in a family with a very self-loathing approach to fatness, has made my relationship with my own body one of obsessive awareness and scrutiny. I don’t want my “struggles” with my weight to be a topic of discussion anymore – I’ve kept that to myself for over a year now – but how I inhabit this body is an entirely different conversation. Anyway, happy new year. Here’s to overcoming insecurity and self-destructive habits in 2020!

As always the highlight for me was going to @andrewsformals and getting fitted in a #gifted rental tux that makes me forget all my insecurities for a few hours – extra shout-out to ’em for butchering a perfectly good pair of trousers so I could get my dream ska-punk tux aesthetic (and Tyler, the voulenteer, who kindly gave me that exceptionally on-brand bowtie)! Can’t wait for next year – really wanna push myself creatively and try something completely different.

Being raised a Jehovah’s Witness I never celebrated Halloween but out of all the major holidays that one made the most sense to boycott because it didn’t exactly seem “god honouring”. However, now that I have my own house I absolutely LOVE throwing up decorations and greeting all the kids at the door. I never realised just how many children actually took part in trick-or-treating in England but we easily got well over 100 visitors. That said, I have NO idea what you’re supposed to say when you open the door so I end up saying some weird shit like “greetings, children!” in a deep booming voice. Why am I like this?

Didn’t shoot much this year; between the card game, the office move, the unprofitably of live-action sketches, and generally not wanting to be on camera all that much, it’s been pretty quiet on the TomSka front. Glad to sneak in a final little shoot before the decade ends, especially with my favourite co-star. Hope you enjoy it!

Another London Comic Con down. You’d think it’d be a real ego trip to spend 3 days meeting people who love your work but it’s incredibly humbling. Years of obsessing over viewcounts and analytics makes it easy to forget that every one of those hits is a real human being whose life you’re privileged to be a little part of. I will say though, I’m starting to feel really really old.
