TEN YEARS LATER – after forgetting about my own writing and focusing on other people’s worlds for a while, I found myself in Cape Town pretending to be a pirate. In 2014, I sat down and smashed out a short story about a Man for Hire looking for a missing Vampire teacher. This was the first version that bears any resemblance to the final book. The first person to read it was with incredible @jparkerk3 who gave me enough positive feedback for me to keep tinkering with it. I had the idea of writing a bunch of short stories about this guy and maybe putting them all together in a book one day. My dear friend @stevenlochran who knows far more about publishing than I do, told me that a book of short stories is rarely an exciting pitch for a publisher and I should think about turning it into a novel. Pirate life became overwhelmingly busy again but at the end of Season 4, when I had no more insane monologues to learn or fights to practice or push-ups to do, I took my friend’s advice. #TheLastSmileInSunderCity Set photos taken by producer extraordinaire Nina Jack Cape Town, Western Province, South Africa ##WhereIWrote Part 3! Just a picture, no description. The goal is to flood social media with our profession.” 🇦🇺 It’s no surprise that in this country with these leaders, artists would get screwed over once again. So many hard workers in all fields of this industry whose careers are made up of a million jobs, one after the other 🤞, always dealing with uncertainty, but are being told they aren’t going to be supported in this even more difficult time. Love to everyone I’ve worked with, here and around the world, looking ahead at uncertain times. We will get though this, I’m sure (we’ve had plenty of practice) and maybe find some better leaders along the way 😘 (Wish I had more Aussie set pics on hand) Every sunset, we sit on the back porch and watch the kangaroos, echidnas, wombats, eagles and occasional mythical beast move through the hills. The binoculars weren’t quite cutting it so the folks got me the perfect Christmas gift. Works better than the ones we had on set #blacksails 📸 @marseyb The Vanguard If you’re in the UK, you better be watching #TheEnd on Sky Atlantic But be ready to 😂 and 😭 Thanks to everyone who made Fetch happen! I was busy most of the time trying to work out how to be a half- decent actor but during the Easter holidays in 2005 I stayed in Perth and spent the whole break typing away at an unplanned and messy version of a fantasy story. There was a walled city hidden inside a land of magical creatures and a few plot pieces that are still in the book today. I wrote about 20,000 words and drew a few character portraits before putting it aside to focus on the skills that would define the next decade of my life – bringing scripts to life and drinking like a pirate.
