In addition to the work we did together on folklore and evermore, I recently had the pleasure of helping @taylorswift rediscover and reinterpret some of her past work. As always, it was an honor to be able to collaborate with her….I produced the first unreleased “From the Vault” song Taylor is releasing tonight at midnight eastern — “You All Over Me” is from Fearless (Taylor’s version) and features the incredible @marenmorris on background vocals. I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed making it!
It has been an incredible journey since Taylor first approached me to write with her. From the moment she wrote Cardigan last April 28th — she unlocked a creative chemistry between us distinct from anything I’d previously experienced, and it led to the creation of two albums in 6 months that are incredibly dear to me — folklore and evermore. Thank you to the Recording Academy for recognizing folklore tonight. Taylor, Jack and I could not be prouder of the work we’ve done together. Thank you to my family: my beautiful wife Stine for constantly lifting me up with her indomitable spirit and supporting me through all of this, and to my children Ingrid, Robin and Mimi who inspire me every day. Thank you Jonathan Low, my amazingly talented engineer and mixer who I’ve been fortunate to have working alongside my projects for the past decade. Thank you Bryce, my loving brother, for your invaluable contributions to folklore — I would never have been able to do any of this without everything I’ve learned from and with you and your constant support. It is no surprise to anyone that your arrangements elevate the album to what it is. My dear friend Justin who always picks me up when I feel down and who has given me a confidence in my music that I sometimes lose — your writing, voice and playing are vital parts of both these albums. I cherish our friendship and every single opportunity we have to collaborate. Thank you so much to Joe for your brilliant writing and collaboration on both folklore and evermore — and for your friendship and spirit which have been a huge part of this unforgettable time. Thank you to my bandmates in the National who I learned how to write and make records together without compromise — and all the artists I’ve worked with for giving me the chance to grow and learn from you. Still processing….so grateful.

This is what Bryce (on the right) and I look like every morning on tour when we stumble out of the tour bus to look for food in a new city. Our friend @grahammacindoe has been taking photos of @thenational for over 20 years….through our collective ups and downs….and has collaborated with the band on a beautiful book of his photography called “Light Years” that’s available for pre order now…supplies are limited so grab it if you’re interested!…..I get emotional looking through graham’s photos and thinking about all the miles we’ve traveled and music we’ve made. You can find info at shop.americanmary.com

I started working on music with @benhoward_ a few years ago when we got together at Long Pond just to experiment with no plan or goal in mind….we started just by collecting song fragments, strange guitar patches and beats ….recording anything and everything that caught our interest but not worrying yet about finding structure or threads between ideas. It was so much fun that we kept getting together over the next many months and gradually songs began to emerge. What started as a relaxed experiment became one of my favorite creative processes and records I’ve ever been part of. Ben’s new record “Collections From the Whiteout” is out today and I couldn’t be more proud of what we made. Thank you to @heyjonlow for brilliant recording and mixing as always; Mickey @ablazeoffeather for so many beautiful contributions; Nat, Richie and India for helping bring songs to life in Paris ; @thisisthekit for lending her beautiful voice; incredible drummers @james_krivchenia @jasontreuting @kyletkeegan and @yussefdayes ; @mooserob for his beautiful arrangements and @tingalayo and @arsononly for magic yet again. And most of all thank you Ben for taking this journey with me.

This evening @bigredmachineadjv is performing at @allycoalition’s 7th Annual Talent Show, an event supporting LGBTQ Youth. Join me tonight at 9pm ET on @twitch. Link in @allycoalition’s bio.
I was lucky to be able to collaborate with and produce @benhoward_’s incredible new record “Collections from the Whiteout” out on March 26. We made this record over 18 months mostly at Long Pond and some in Paris too ….collecting sounds, loose strands and songs and chasing experiments without any pressure as we went. The final days of recording at Long Pond were in early March last year when the European borders were being shut and Ben and his band mate Mickey had to make a run for it early to get home ….thankfully we finished just in time. I couldn’t be more proud of it and excited for you all to hear it. Will have a lot more to say about the music and the many friends who contributed to this record but go check out the first song out now at the link in my bio… What A Day….
We were honored when @sharonvanhalen asked @bigredmachineadjv to cover a song for the 10th anniversary of Epic. I love every album she’s made but Epic is special because it was the one she was making when we first met. @blobtower and I covered her song “Love More” with my brother @brycedessner at Music Now in 2010… an experience which led to meeting Sharon soon after and recording her next album “Tramp” together in my garage in Brooklyn (the first album I produced for someone else!). Over the years, we have often toured together and collaborated in many ways. So recording “A Crime” with Justin felt like coming full circle and was a giant catharsis for us… I nearly broke the studio monitors blasting this song over and over. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do (and then go listen to all Sharon’s songs over and over). Listen to Big Red Machine – A Crime in bio.
