This is a full-on emotion researcher geek out with @susandavid_phd on how emotional granularity and agility benefit us as individuals and as leaders. We think that denying our emotions makes us stronger and more resilient, but the research shows that it actually makes us LESS resilient. This is such a GREAT conversation on the new episode of the Dare to Lead podcast. The Unlocking Us convo with Drs. Emily and Amelia Nagoski changed the way we talk about stress in our house AND how we “complete our stress cycles.” This learning grabbed me by the shoulders: “The stress itself will kill you faster than the stressor will — unless you do something to complete the stress response cycle.” The dehumanization of women. The dehumanization of Asians. The dehumanization of sex workers. The dehumanization around class. The dehumanization of immigrants. Dehumanizing language is a radicalizing tool of white supremacy and white evangelical extremism (which are inextricably connected). Combine a long history of discrimination and bias with leaders who talk about the “Kung Flu” and “grabbing them by the pussy” and you can see the very short distance between our language, our thoughts, and our actions including everything from violence and diminishing that violence with “just having a bad day” to “Well, look what kind of work they did.” This is why shame, humiliation, and dehumanizing make the world a more dangerous place for all of us. We shouldn’t tolerate anyone being shamed, humiliated or dehumanized – even the people who bring out our rage. It’s easier than accountability, it’s a quick way to discharge our anger, and it can even get some “likes” and fist bumps. But, there is no question that dehumanizing makes the world a more dangerous and vicious place for all of us. For a list of resources to #StopAsianHate – see Instagram Stories. We’ve also made a permanent Story Highlight Circle called #AAPI on my Instagram profile so they stay available. We are back after 36 hours without heat or electricity. The state is still in crisis. We’re seeing nursing homes and hospitals being evacuated, long lines for food, boil mandates are in effect (where there is water), no gasoline, and more cold weather ahead. Many of you have reached out to ask where you can give and donate to help Texans. Thank you. First, if you know folks here — check on them. Second, I’m supporting the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund during this crisis. They are working across the state with many different organizations to bring food, warmth, and shelter to people in need. The minimum donation is $5 — which makes a bigger difference than you think. Also, here’s the answer to the question I always ask: 92 cents from each dollar goes directly to aid. Link is in the profile. Special thanks to all of those folks who are showing up, working, and volunteering. Many of these essential workers are the same exhausted folks who are getting us through the pandemic. It feels overwhelming right now. When @dr.editheger was 16 years old, her family was sent to Auschwitz concentration camp. Her parents were murdered the day they arrived. Dr. Eger was pulled from a pile of corpses when the camp was liberated in 1945. She’s dedicated her life to finding her freedom and dedicated her career to helping us understand trauma, healing, and the power of the human spirit. I will never stop feeling deeply moved by and grateful for this conversation and Dr. Eger’s work. Responsible gun ownership and gun reform are NOT mutually exclusive. Are the people we elected working for us or the gun lobby? Because the gun lobby and a safer country ARE mutually exclusive. Responsible gun ownership and gun reform are NOT mutually exclusive. Are the people we elected working for us or the gun lobby? Because the gun lobby and a safer country ARE mutually exclusive. Change is hard. Modeling what you want to see in others is hard. Daring leaders lean into hard versus stepping back and expecting others to carry the discomfort of change. It’s not fear that gets in the way of daring leadership, it’s armor. How do we self-protect when we feel uncertain, afraid, or vulnerable? Is our armor perfectionism, being the knower, shame/blame, reacting versus thoughtful responding, action bias . . .? Dropping the first of a two-part solo special on Daring versus Armored leadership on the Dare to Lead podcast today. As we mourn 500,000 COVID deaths in the US, I was reminded of this quote from @iamdavidkessler. When he said it during our conversation about grief on Unlocking Us, it hit me as truth. Often a number like 500,000 seems too big to get our heads and hearts around. The loss seems incomprehensible. But as our friends, family, and neighbors reckon with their grief, and do so without funerals and many of the important witnessing rituals that are part of our healing, it’s important to remind them that they are seen, loved, and not alone. This is the full quote: “Each person’s grief is as unique as their fingerprint. But what everyone has in common is that no matter how they grieve, they share a need for their grief to be witnessed. That doesn’t mean needing someone to try to lessen it or reframe it for them. The need is for someone to be fully present to the magnitude of their loss without trying to point out the silver lining.” —David Kessler My Unlocking Us conversation with @emmanuelacho is on the Dare to Lead podcast today! I want to make sure every one hears this! And his DENIAL acronym is both helpful and OUCH. Y’all know I LOVED this conversation! Dr. @pippagrange is one of the most respected sports psychologists in the world — she’s transformed teams across sports and across the globe. In this conversation on the Dare to Lead podcast, we talk about what it means to live with an open heart versus clenched fists. At Siete Family Foods, love and connection are the secret ingredients to good food and a strong culture. If you want to know what humility and hard work sound like, tune into this conversation on the new episode of the Dare to Lead podcast. This quote from the Unlocking Us episode with @dr.editheger really pierced my heart. I’ll never forget this conversation. You asked how you could help during the winter storm and I pointed you to @episcopalrelief – a trusted nonprofit on the ground here in Texas. I just found out that you raised over $500,000 for Texans. You fed, clothed, and sheltered people who were scared, cold, hungry, and some who were literally freezing to death. My heart is full. Blessings. Talking to Dr. Angus Fletcher about how inventions in literature like the plot twist and the stretch can nurture democracy, power personal growth, and improve our mental health and well-being. Angus is one of the world’s foremost scholars on the science of storytelling. He is currently Professor of Story Science at Ohio State’s Project Narrative, the globe’s top academic think tank for the study of stories. This is SO good! Even though surrender is a critical part of my creative process, it’s a tough concept for me. When @sarahelizabethlewis1 explained that surrender is “giving in, not giving up” – it resonated deeply. Our two-part Dare to Lead podcast conversation was mind-blowing. Congrats @taranajaneen ! Beautiful woman. Beautiful book. I can’t wait. This is the story that changed all of us. Preorder now! Cover by @bisabutler What a year! Thank you for being a part of our awkward, brave, and kind community. I’d love to know what the podcast has unlocked for you. What did you learn or what rang true for you? This book completely captured my heart. As I read it I thought back to a moment over a decade ago when I cried to my therapist, “Vulnerability is just excruciating.” She looked at me, smiled, and said, “Yes. It can be. It can also be quite exquisite.” Hanif Abdurraqib’s (@nifmuhammad) words are poetry and they envelop us and carry us from excruciating moments to exquisite moments in the most brilliant and unexpected way. The unwillingness to choose between the deeply human moments that give life meaning — the grief, the gratitude, the love, the rage, the beauty, the pain — is where genius and beauty happen. There is so much genius and beauty in this man and this book. Listen to our conversation on the new episode of Unlocking Us. A raw and unflinching Unlocking Us podcast conversation with Dr. @yabablay on identity, colorism, history, grief, and transformation. I haven’t stopped thinking about her parting question to all of us: What are you willing to give up? If you recognize that we need a better system and a better world to live in, what are you willing to give up so that we can get there? It’s not going to happen with you getting to hold on to all the privileges that you have now. The list is long but I’m pretty sure it starts with tapping out of hard conversations to keep ourselves comfortable. Congratulation @texaswbb – You brought the fire! Texas.
