I’m so inspired by young people around the world who are on the front lines of the struggle for human rights. From protecting the environment to fighting inequality and discrimination, they are stepping in to do the work adults should but so far have failed to do. And in refugee camps and conflict areas globally, children are bearing the burden of the consequences of those bad decisions.
When children and young people have the agency, power and knowledge to speak up, they can change the lives of both young people and adults, helping to achieve a more equal society.
That is the message of our new book, Know Your Rights and Claim them, which was written in consultation with young activists around the world – and is for them, and all the many young people fighting for their rights globally.

I was honored to meet with some of the brave US gymnasts who appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday. I’m in awe of their courage and commitment to preventing future failures to investigate abuse. As Aly Raisman said in her testimony, “Over 100 victims could have been spared the abuse. All we needed was one adult to do the right thing.” Sending support and respect to them, and to all who are reliving this trauma so that system reforms can occur.
I was on Capitol Hill this week, engaging with Senators on the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization and FBI reforms, including better protections for abused children, non-biased forensic evidence collection, trauma care, and judicial training.

I was honored – and nervous – to introduce the amazing poet @amandascgorman the other night at the Variety Power of Women Awards event.
Tap the link in my bio to see her read her new poem, “We Rise”, honoring “These women who stand up / knowing the wind / Not by where it is, but where it is blowing / Leading worlds not by how society is / But where change is going.”
End of #summerreading.
These are some of the favorites in our house. Would love to know yours.
The future for Afghan women, and their place within society, hang in the balance. Many brave young women are protesting and demanding their rights, despite the extreme danger they face. They are the defiant women of Kabul.
The BBC has blurred their faces to protect their identities but their message is loud and clear: “We are the young generation and will bring the bud of freedom.”
I co-produced this video with the BBC’s @YaldaHakim for @BBCWorldService and @BBCNews. We hope that by making these videos about young people caught up in global conflict, we will give them a voice and help connect them with other under-25s around the world. Their voices are powerful and they demand our attention.

Young people are on the frontlines of conflict, displacement and persecution globally. At the same time, they are the some of the most effective voices defending human rights.
This month sees the publication of ‘Know Your Rights And Claim Them’, a book for teens I’m proud to have written with @amnesty and Professor Geraldine Van Bueren. Many inspiring youth activists helped to shape the book. Some of them are featured in @amnesty’s free introductory online course on child rights, which I took this weekend.

Today Know Your Rights and Claim Them is published in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The book was written in collaboration with children and youth rights activists around the world, and is for them and all children fighting for their voice and rights. We hope it will be published in many different languages over time.
I am sharing some of my favorite sections of the text. I continue to be inspired by those who take to the streets to have their voices heard around the world.
Every young person has the right to express their views, and to take part in peaceful protest. But even though it’s a human right, protest marches globally often provoke restrictive or violent responses from the state.
Know Your Rights and Claim Them includes advice on how to claim your right to freedom of expression — including some of the essential steps to consider to keep yourself safe.

“We will not go to school till the day our sisters join us.”
“I will not go to school without my sister. I support my sister. We are equal.”
This is the message from two brave Afghan boys, whose images have been shared around the world on social media. They have taken a stand as the Taliban have moved to restrict women and girls from attending school, universities and the workplace.
The BBC has blurred the boys’ faces to protect them from becoming targets themselves.
It is the third video on Afghanistan I co-produced with the BBC’s @yaldahakim and directed by Robert Timothy, for @BBCWorldService and @BBCNews, that looks at how young people are standing up to Taliban restrictions. Together, they form the first part of a broader series about young people caught up in global conflict. We hope that by sharing their stories, we will help their voices be heard and connect them to other under-25s around the world.
