L’Escarpolette – ‘The Happy Accidents of The Swing’ – painted by Jean Honore Fragonard in 1767 🔎 Delighted by the frivolity and bemused by the eroticism, I had to leap inside the frame of this painting too…
🩰 The Swing is one of the most famous and beloved paintings of the Rococo Era. Depicting a young woman in a billowing dress, she is pushed on the swing by one man behind her, and another below her peers from the bushes to glimpse underneath her dress.
The story goes, that a courtier asked the French painter Gabriel Francois Doyen to capture his mistress in this compromising scene, but refusing on the grounds of frivolity, the commission was then passed on to Fragonard instead, resulting in his most famous piece of work 🎀
🤔 Now tell me – which famous Disney film features this painting too – and what key element of the composition do they purposefully remove?

I’m outside St James’ Palace 🏰, the most senior royal palace in England, and one of London’s most impressive Tudor palaces.
💭 Constructed of red brick, a desirable and expensive material of the day, it was built 491 years ago on the order of the formidable King Henry VIII. St James’ Palace remains the formal base of Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal Court even today.

In the Rococo era, men and women both wore pink blush. In fact, Madame de Pompadour’s shade was so iconic, it became known as ‘Pompadour Pink’ 🌸 what are some other fashion styles that feature prominent blush? 👇

(SOUND ON 🔊) The Mysterious Disappearance of Anne Boleyn’s B Necklace 📿
For centuries folks have wondered where this iconic piece of jewellery has gone – was it destroyed, lost to time, or did it even ever exist? 💭
🏰 When Anne was executed 486 years ago, Henry the 8th made it his mission to have all images of the former Queen destroyed too. However many subsequent portraits painted in her living memory show her wearing a variety of personalised jewellery which was popular at the time – her B necklace, an AB pendant, and an A pendant
🌬 All pieces seem to vanish – except for one which emerges after her death – her A pendant is shown worn by her only daughter, the future Queen Elizabeth the First, leading the assumption that the rest of her jewels were passed on to her daughter too.
But what of the other jewels? 💎
Well, fast forward to the modern day, and the most important piece of royal adornment – Queen Elizabeth II’s Imperial State Crown – features large rare pearls. The Royal Family’s own records lead them to believe that these pearls were inherited from Queen Elizabeth I herself – could these be the famous pearls once seen around Anne’s own neck? 👑

HOW I TRANSFORMED INTO ANNE BOLEYN
Based on the famous portrait of Anne Boleyn in the National Portrait Gallery, I spent 3 hours in photoshop recreating her image! Visit my page for the final result
I chose clothing in my wardrobe that most closely resembled the painting, did my hair and makeup in a similar style, and wore my B necklace.
I then copied her pose as closely as I could using a remote timer on my tripod. Once I brought the image into Photoshop, I tried to match the faces up as best as I could, and set about changing my top’s colour, adding details, and removing the background.
Some items I took from the painting itself, including her gold and pearl necklaces, and her French Hood headdress.
Most importantly, I changed the colours of my skin to look much more like aged varnish, and I added in shadows and outlines to my nose, eyebags, and chin to better resemble Anne’s.
Finally, I used frequency separation to lift the craquelure from the original painting, and applied it on top of my own recreation
What do you think? This was so much fun to make, I cant wait to hear your thoughts!

the life of still-life 💐 in the 1600s, two floral frenzies emerged: the first, a Wall Street-esque boom and bust of Dutch Tulip Bulb traders — feeding a heightened demand, the appetite for rare and unusual Tulips soared through the roof fetching spectacular speculative prices, before crashing rapidly and without warning.
The second has longevity, and even today, we are ravenous for the 17th Century Still Life paintings from Netherlandish artists, capturing the symbolic transient existence of an arrangement of unusual flowers 🌺
This week I’m learning more about those artists, and I want to explore more about the symbolism of flowers, and revel in their beauty 🌸

ANNA BOLINA VXOR HENRI OCTA 🏰 My Version ❤️
💭 Born 521 years ago, Anne Boleyn was the second wife of Henry VIII, and his desire to instead marry her in favour of his first wife was a crucial factor in the English Reformation, the separation of the English Church from Rome. Until then, the church and Rome had been bonded for over 1,500 years — since the occupation of Roman England at the beginning of the first millennium.
🖼 I love imagining the people of the past. Isn’t it incredible to think that it’s only in the past hundred years that we have been able to document people with photographs? Before then, we could only use paintings and descriptions to convey a sense of one’s image. After Anne was executed, all contemporary portraits of her likeness were destroyed, leaving the portraits of her painted since then to continually compound upon the same scarce details that could filter through the fist determined to stamp out her memory.
🎨 My painting recreation above is based on one of the most famous images of Anne. It was painted in the late 16th Century by an unknown English artist. Made with @adobe @photoshop CC

THE FRENCH HOOD: FASHION HISTORY 👑
This headband was made illegal in the 1500s – but we still don’t know what it really looked like 🤔
💭Known as the French Hood, this layered fabric headdress appeared in paintings all across Europe in the Tudor period. Worn by many queens and noblewomen, upon reaching peak popularity in the mid-century, Henry the 8th even passed a law stating that the wearing of French Hoods with trims of gold, pearls, or jewels would be illegal for women who were not married to a man who owned at least one horse 🐎
Popular imaginings of the French Hood lead us to believe that it’s a stiff crescent of fabric that sits above the head. It’s inspired fashion for centuries, including Prada’s puffy headbands of SS19 👜
But… what did it really look like? ‼️
The truth is a little different to the movies. Based on statues, and side-profile images, it becomes clear that the French Hood would have laid flat atop of the head, and less like a tiara than thought. 🏰
😭 but Sadly, though the French Hood is an iconic piece of fashion history, there are no known surviving original pieces left in existence, leaving its exact construction and styling a mystery lost to time to this day.

I tried making an Old Masters’ floral still life arrangement 💐
It’s always a pleasure to have fresh flowers brightening the home, and inspired by the low country artists of the 1600s, I tried my hand at creating an arrangement, instead of putting them in a vase like I always do
There’s transient beauty about cut stem flowers, and I hope I was able to honour their presence in my home well with my arrangement!

Wow! I really tried my hardest with this but let me tell you, it was kind of difficult to replicate the beautiful way in which these artists paint… I feel like I’m so used to editing people, but editing flowers is a completely different ball game.
Would love to know your thoughts! Can you name any of these flowers?💐

It’s all about the details 🔍 if you walk past, you may miss it. But stand and stay for a while, and you start to notice little creatures dwelling between the flowers. Is that a beautiful leaf, or a butterfly’s wing?
These captivating details continue to draw the viewer in. Still life paintings from the mid-millennium captured the beauties of the natural world, and all its creatures, and looking deeper still, it’s further intriguing to imagine the meanings these insects could convey.
A butterfly, freed from her cocoon, represents one beautiful yet sorrowful stage of the divine cycle of life – and meanwhile, the caterpillar, another, more hardy and earthen, less beautiful, but closer to birth than death.
Spiders, symbolic of fear and sorrow, creep across the painted pages too, along with beetles (great jewels of nature).
One thing’s for certain – a snail is certainly slow enough to make an excellent subject for still life.

DRESS LIKE IT’S 1737: Rococo Era 🇫🇷
The impactful Rococo period, whilst relatively short-lived, was defined by artists like François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and later, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun.
💭 The muses portrayed were often celebrities of the day – Madame de Pompadour, Marie Antoinette, and other various various mistresses to the elite, captured in a boisterous, ostentatious, whimsical, and sometimes erotic fashion.
👑 It had a distinct colour palette, with rich jewel tones, and ladies were painted wearing courtly attire, with bright pink blushed cheeks, over-paled skin, and decadent powdered heads of curls.
💐 Nestled between the Baroque and Neoclassical styles, it was a trend that ricocheted throughout Western Europe in the 18th Century, and the contrasts from artifice and excess to simplicity and traditionalism are one we see continuing even today within our cultural trend cycle.
