In Portugal with Ai Weiwei, standing at the trunk of his Pequi Tree, a 32m high iron cast of a 1200 year old dying tree he found in the Atlantic Forest, in Brazil. An engineering feat composed of over 1000 segments, this soaring spire is a stark and poetic monument to nature’s enduring power and ultimate fragility. This very tree was the last of its kind on the planet, and has since collapsed. At Julia Stoschek Collection in Berlin last week, this hologram by Cyprien Gaillard greets you at the entrance of the current show, Fire in My Belly. Here, a mythical monster looking like an Indonesian shadow puppet emerges from the light, endlessly devouring it’s own head. Gorgeous and uncanny, it haunts me still. @juliastoschekcollection @cypriengaillard #berlin #hologram
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi announces 2025 opening! A milestone in our historic project. It offers the most spectacular and curatorially advanced program for contemporary art in the region and beyond, and promises to be a platform for intellectual, creative and social innovation. A truly visionary museum for the art of our time. It’s an honor to lead the brilliant curatorial team! #guggenheimabudhabi #guggenheim @maisa_alqassimi @reemfadda @sasha.kalter @jessicacerasi @rosedemir @sandhini.poddar @hanansayedworrell #frankghery #visionary #future #abudhabi @margaritalizca @srasfwn
At Tate Modern for the launch (literally) of Anika Yi’s Turbine Hall commission. She sees these flying amoebas as machines, generated not by artificial intelligence so much as “artificial life programs.” Science, myth, hope and imagination collide in space… PLUS it’s so good to be back at an IRL opening! #tatemodern @friezeofficial #frieze #anikayi @guggenheim #hugobossprize #ai

In London, where we counted the years we have known each other based on their first Paris address, still in my contacts. Twenty-something? @hansulrichobrist #hansulrichobrist @koojeonga #koojeonga #friends @serpentineuk #comrade
My mother in Mexico, where I grew up in the 1960s. Artist, writer, gardener, traveller, teacher, collector of extraordinary friends, she is who I thank today and everyday – for inspiration, for love, for life. We miss her wit and wisdom, but are guided by her genius and spirit, always. #thanksgiving #love #motherdaughter #artist
Best show in town is Pipilotti Rist’s sprawling retrospective at LAMoCA. We are instantly swept into an intimate dream world, part Alice in Wonderland, part Louise Bourgeois – mesmerizing, at moments terrifying, sometimes humorous living spaces swirling with video projections of vaguely discernible intimacies. She commands video like no other artist, using it as paint but also as a poet of pain, like Anais Nin. This is womanly art, voluptuous, beautiful, anthem-like, crazy. @friezeofficial @moca @pipilotti_rist_studio #losangeles #videoart
In Abu Dhabi, with our fabulous and brilliant Guggenheim Abu Dhabi curatorial team. We are at the show, As we Gaze Upon Her, co-curated by our Sara bin Safwan for Warehouse 421. Featuring women and non-binary artists from the region, it explores states of contemporary womanhood with poetry, pain, and politics. Here, art is an agent for social change – and it’s urgency is celebrated. @guggenheim #guggenheimabudhabi @maisa_alqassimi #warehouse421 #womensupportingwomen #abudhabi
The Guggenheim shimmers with three extraordinary shows – Kandinsky in the rotunda, Etel Adnan in the High Gallery and first ramps, and Gillian Wearing in the tower galleries. Mystic, poet, witness, each so right for these still-fractured times. Congratulations to the curatorial teams and all who made these shows so vital. @museoguggenheim #guggenheim #gillianwearing #kandinsky #eteladnan @jenny_blessing @meganfontanella #nattrotman @kathbrinson @mamacurator #newyork #newyorknow
Happy New Year! My first trip outside the US after the long Covid lockdown was to Rome, last June, where we headed straight to the Vatican Museums. Here, Raphael’s School of Athens projects a world inspired by and devoted to philosophy and learning. Centuries on, as wars and revolutions shape our quotidian realities, all that survives, as Susan Sontag said, is ART and THOUGHT. This New Years Eve, I toast the artists and thinkers whose work is my calling, and whose friendship is my blessing. 🥂👁🎆 #newyearseve #2022 #art #schoolofathens

In LA @friezeofficial, this amalgam of old gazebos by Chris Burden, called Dreamers Folly, is at the heart of the Fair. It’s beginning to feel like the old days, with crowds of friends from around the world, as if renewing our vows here in this place. I thee love. #frieze #losangeles #chrisburden #myvows #artworld
At Dubai Expo, Rashid Rana clads the towers of the Pakistan Pavillon in 24,000 reflective panels, each minutely different in color, size or form to represent, the artist says, the “diversity of Pakistan.” #best @rashidranastudio #expodubai2020
In Abu Dhabi, thrilled to see the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s curatorial vision articulated so cogently in this week’s The Economist. Please read here or at the link in my story. Congratulations to the brilliant team of curators lead by Maisa Al Qassimi with Reem Fadda and by my Guggenheim colleagues Sasha Kalter-Wasserman, Jessica Cerasi, Sandhini Poddar, and Margarita Hernández. In London, we saw the fantastic Rasheed Araeen installation, Rhapsody in Four Colors, at the Aga Khan Centre. It occupies the central vertical lobby, taking our eyes through an infinity of interlocking forms. Rhapsody, indeed. #agakhancentre #rasheedaraeen #rhapsody #contemporaryart #installationart #london
In Riyadh, participating in the closing panel and ceremony of the inaugural Diriyah Biennial curated. The show, curated by Phil Tinari with Wejdan Reda, is a brilliant essay on the “aesthetics of reform,” presenting Saudi artists in the context of other critical reform movements, especially China. It is an intellectual feat and a curatorial triumph. The sense of euphoria here is palatable as artists respond to “the new Saudi” with fierce expression. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi team thanks our best friend Alia al Senusi for making our visit possible, and we commend the great work of the Diriyah Biennial Foundation under leadership of Dina Amin and Aya Albakree. #diriyahbiennale @philiptinari @ayalbakree #aliaalsenussi #riyadh @whyheywhynot
