We are so thrilled to welcome Mariët Westermann as the Guggenheim’s next Director and CEO. She brings enormous gravitas to our work across the constellation, shares our commitment to global thinking in an expanded museum field, and has long been our ally on the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi project. I have known Mariët since her deanship at IFA, where I served as a trustee in her first years of leadership at NYU. Everywhere she goes, positive transformation ensues. Our future is bright. #guggenheimmuseum #nyuad #leadership #news #guggenheim #marietwestermann
Our friend and great artist Park Seo-bo passed away on October 14, and we mourn with the Korean art community who has lost a treasured teacher and abiding force in the Korean art world. I was honored to write on his work on several occasions, and, in his company, to come to appreciate his wit, his take on modern art and aesthetics, and his love of good wine. The Guggenheim is fortune to have great paintings in our collection by gift and acquisition. #parkseobo @parkseobo #koreanart ##koreancontemporaryart #frieze @tinakimgallery @kukjegallery
In Paris, the Rothko exhibition at FLV is a curatorial feat, and the greatest tribute to the artist’s violent sublime since the Guggenheim’s rotunda show many decades ago. The artist’s deep search for the meaning of form after the horrors of world war resonates with acute pain this week… @fondationlv @markrothkoart #parisnow #markrothko #rothko #parisplusparartbasel

Congratulations to Nairy Baghramian for her Met Facade Commission, four rambunctious, whimsical and strangely emotional compositions that feel like they tumbled out of drawings for a utopian city that was never built. Hands down, the best use of the Facade so far. Roberta Smith’s review gets it right: “Their final lesson may be almost biblical- stone to stone, dust to dust – which is the illusory nature of all things, institutions included.” @metmuseum @nairybaghramian #metmuseum #thebest #newyork #robertasmithnyt @robertasmithnyt

In Antwerp this weekend, celebrating Axel and May Vervoordt’s golden wedding anniversary at their castle, in the light of a full moon. Honored to be among their many friends from around the world who revel in the beauty they create, layered with palimpsests of cultural, architectural, and aesthetic visions drawn from Old Europe, Japan, India…and powered by the vision of some of the greatest artists of our time. Music is perhaps their most beloved passion; flip through these images to see Axel and May with soprano Joyce DiDonato, who performed the evening before on a stage whose backdrop was a monumental wall hanging by El Anatsui. Thank you, friends, for your enlightened generosity. And congratulations. @axelvervoordt_co @mayvervoordt @borisvervoordt @kimsoojastudio @anish.kapoor @jamesturrellart #magic #antwerp #goldenanniversary #gutai #joycedidonato #friendship

At Tate, encountering Hilma Af Klint whose 2019 show at the Guggenheim changed the origin stories of the history of modern abstract art. She wrote of these 1907 works, commissioned by spiritual guides: My mission, if it succeeds, is of great significance to humankind. For I am able to describe the path of the soul for the beginning of the spectacle of life to its end. @tate @guggenheim #traceybashkoff #hilmaafklint #spirituality #abstractart #visionary
Hello world! Happy to announce the publication of these books which I have co-authored with brilliant colleagues: James Lee Byars (Pirelli Hangar Bicocca, 2023); Shilpa Gupta (Phaidon, 2023); Korean Art after 1989 (Philadelphia Museum of Art and Yale, 2023) and Shiro Tsujimura (Flammarion, 2024). As it turns out, I am happiest as a scholar and writer. More coming soon! @flammarionlivres @yalebooks @pirelli_hangarbicocca @artbook @phaidonpress @guggenheim
In Venice with Yu Hong! Please come to the opening of our show, Yu Hong: Another One Bites the Dust, at the Chiesetta della Misericordia next Friday April 19 from 3 to 6pm. Yu Hong’s paintings of birth, life, desire, sex and death upend and contest with an entire world of sacred art. Acid realism in embrace of the Baroque! With profound thanks to @guggenheim and @lisson_gallery.
If you are in Aspen, come to the AMAZING Jess Gillam’s concert tomorrow night at Aspen Music Festival! She is playing a new work by the GENIUS Nico Muhly commissioned by @aspenmusicfest. The glory of it all! @nicomuhly #aspen #contemporarymusic #jessgillam #nicomuhly #genius #mustsee
In Paris, thrilled to have contributed to the catalogue and conversations around the moving and deeply-researched exhibition, “J’ai une famille” organized by Evelyne Jouanno, Hou Hanru and Isabelle Renard at the Musée de L’Histoire de l’Immigration. The show features work by a generation of artists from China who made Paris their home in the 1980s and early 90s, and made a community forging what Chen Zhen called “trans experience” – the in-between of being other, everywhere. Bravi to the curatorial team and to ma famille Chen Zhen, Xu Min, Zhen Bo, Shen Yuan, Huang Yong Ping, Yang Jiechang, Martina Köppel Yang…❤️ #parisnow #houhanru #hansulrichobrist #evelynejouanno #huangyongping #shenyuan #kamelmennour #galeriacontinua #parisplusparartbasel #asianow

In Beijing, visiting artists whom we haven’t seen in three years. The changes are profound. Some, like Cao Fei, have moved studios and, in her case, have a new pet. This Belgian hen’s name is 小紅。 @cao_fei #caofei #mypet #best #resiliance
Thrilled to announce the opening of “Yu Hong: Another One Bites the Dust” at the Chiesetta della Misericordia on April 20, in conjunction with the 60th Venice Bienniale. This site-specific installation presents an epic suite of paintings by Yu Hong that spans the arc of birth, life, and death, using images of figures ripped from the Internet, in gestures of pain both real and fantastical. The project is a special off-site program of the Guggenheim’s Asian Art Initiative and is presented by the Asian Art Circle, and made possible with the generous support of Lisson. The catalogue features contributions by Pio Monte della Misericordia curator Loredana Gazzara; artist Michael Armitage; and composer Nico Muhly, who is creating an immersive soundscape premiering June 2 in Venice. #yuhong #venicebiennale2024 #guggenheim #lissongallery #anotheronebitesthedust Yu Hong “Make a Wish,” 2023 Acrylic on canvas; 340 x 140 cm Copyright Yu Hong, Courtesy Lisson Gallery
