Ruby Bridges is most famous for being the 6 year old girl who integrated the first elementary school in Louisiana, escorted daily by US Marshalls amidst angry crowds. Since then, Ruby has been an activist working with young people to “inspire the next generation of leaders to end racism together one step at a time.” On the heels of the California legislature voting unanimously to pass a resolution to officially honor November 14th as The Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day the RBF is launching the first annual RB Walk to School day. To our great dismay, this year’s #InternationalDayForTheEliminationOfViolenceAgainstWomen is marked by the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan and resultant rollback of girls and women’s rights. We’ve heard devastating media reports of young girls sold into marriage to men decades older. Magul, 10; Zohra, 7; Noqra, 8; Saliha, 7; Benazir, 8; Parwana, 9 (with her 2-year-old sister also at risk); are just some of countless children faced with this fate. Sobbing, Magul pleaded with a CNN reporter, “If they make me go, I will kill myself. I don’t want to leave my parents.” Make your voice heard and protest the forced marriages of Afghan girls by signing our petition spearheaded by Afghan Peace Negotiator and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Fawzia Koofi. After seven months of uncertainty, teenage girls across the country had been anxiously awaiting the reopening of schools, only to be turned back from the schools’ doors and further denied their right to education. Lack of access to schooling is a top driver of child marriage globally; many more girls are now at extremely high risk due to this cruel decision. #LetAfghanGirlsLearn
