This week in 1988 George’s “Got My Mind Set on You” hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The music video for the song was a spoof of the 1987 horror comedy film, ‘Evil Dead II’. Directed by Gary Weis, the song was George’s third #1 single in the US.

The earliest written and recorded examples of ‘Art of Dying’ in George’s archive date back to 1966. The final released version on All Things Must Pass was recorded on July 1, 1970. “It was done in a live way. I routined the songs with the band until we had everything worked out. We had maybe four acoustic guitars, two electric guitars, a bass, two drummers, there was even like marimbas, a couple of shakers, tambourines and two pianos – or pedal harmonium and pianos. So all this stuff, some of it was being mixed: the piano and the harmonium were sometimes mixed together, all the guitars were together, because we only had eight tracks. So we worked over and over on the songs in the studio so that everybody got the right routine, and it was sounding really nice.” George

George wasn’t completely satisfied with the initial version of ‘Isn’t It A Pity’ so the arrangement was changed – with organ, piano and lead guitar all featured in the intro – and the tempo slowed down. It took the full day, Wednesday 3rd June, 1970 at Abbey Road’s Studio Three, but they completed the take that would become ‘Isn’t It A Pity (Version Two)’. When it came to the final tracklist for All Things Must Pass, George decided he liked both versions and included them on the album.

‘All Things Must Pass’ was a number one album around the world for George upon its original release and the 50th Anniversary edition saw it become a Global Top 10 album all over again in 2021. “Even Before I started, I knew I was gonna make a good album because I had so many songs and I had so much energy. For me to do my own album after that – it was joyous. Dream of dreams.” George.

The demo version of ‘I Dig Love’ was recorded on Tuesday 26 May, 1970 with George, Ringo and Klaus at Abbey Road’s Studio Three. It has a very different feel to the album version. However, the final version features George on slide guitar. He had rarely used slide in The Beatles, but now it added a new dimension of melodic composition and texture throughout All Things Must Pass, and became George’s signature guitar sound.

Artist Tom Wilkes originally designed and drew this piece for the All Things Must Pass album. It was intended as a poster for the album but George decided against using it, feeling that it portrayed him as a deity. Two of the Barry Feinstein photos in the poster were used for the singles of ‘My Sweet Lord’ and ‘What is Life’ and also made an appearance in the videos for ‘Run of the Mill (Take 36)’ and ‘Cosmic Empire (Day 2 Demo)’ from the All Things Must Pass 50th Anniversary.
