In Jan 2021, while having treatment for cervical cancer, I started filming myself. It started as a way to make sense of what was happening to me, but once I got out the other side, I realised there was a much bigger story, about how we approach cancer treatment in this country and whether we’re always getting the balance of risks right. I spent last year with @curiousfilms1 making a full film, probably the most important one I’ll ever be part of. It’s out on the 2nd June on BBC2 and there’s a piece about it in today’s Telegraph magazine. I know that cancer has been on everyone’s minds a lot in the last week, with the incredible story of Dame Deborah James. One of the BBC big cheeses sent me a message last night about the film, and managed to hit the nail on the head of what we’ve been trying so hard to make. He said it isn’t a cookie cutter ‘celebrity sickness’ show, but a doc that has something much more interesting and unusual to say. A big part of the reason for that are the incredible people who allowed us to include their stories. There’s the inspirational Nina – full of courage and determination. There’s the wonderful Anne – who let us in during what must have been some of her darkest moments. And there’s the remarkable Rob – someone who profoundly changed my view of what matters in life. You’ll see why when you watch it. I hope the result is a doc that dares to ask genuinely difficult questions while holding on to a strong emotional core. Can’t wait for you to see it. Four and a half thousand mini bricks later, two teeny tiny stair runners and more money on miniature ceramic tiles than I will ever admit out loud, and the dolls house is ready. Well, nearly. I don’t think the kids have noticed that the brickwork is still to be pointed or that the lights haven’t been fully wired in to the plug. Not sure they much care tbf. The whole thing was fiddly beyond belief (and masochistically enjoyable the whole way along) and worth every last hand cut slate tile in the end. #dollshouse

If you squint you can see everyone lolling along at my totally excellent equation joke. (At least, that’s how I remember it). Rolling into the weekend like 🩰
Last time I wrote a book, I hid a £20 note in a copy for someone to find. This time, we’ve gone one better (or worse depending on how you feel about £20 notes).
