Riley Elliott Instagram - The incredible clip of the moment @jimipartingtonsdx experienced the full potential of an adult Great White shark but walked away unharmed. This clip comes from one of the best @sharkweek shows I have ever seen, Great White Open Ocean, created by @jeff_kurr also featuring @animalbrandon and @dickie_chivell with filming by @liquid_action_films It’s such an amazing story for me because it showcases someone with true talent and passion for working with animals. @jimipartingtonsdx brings the nature kid out in all of us when watching this, the lust to understand wild animals and even the largest and most dangerous of them. And even after such a potentially life threatening encounter, he had the knowledge and experience to look down, spot the shark and swim for the boat but then the most important part, tell us that he chose to put himself there, in a plastic box, where the shark continually started testing him and it, and how the shark recognised when he wasn’t looking and came in full tilt to test, likely what the cage was and why Jimi was in it. There’s no blame on the shark from Jimi nor anyone, rather the only blame is the pure intrigue to learn more about animals and how far one can go to do that. If you haven’t seen this show it is amazing. So well shot and edited, incredible music that emotionally connects you to what it is that draws us to swim with sharks, and it’s a tale of passion, determination and a guy who will be back working with sharks because that’s who he is. Riley Elliott Instagram - This is how a 12foot Mako shark introduces itself when you jump into the deep blue sea with it after hours of chumming. To be honest it’s pretty polite at this stage, it had already rammed the boat, smashed the engines, tried to bite us up on the swim step and then @abc4explore and myself had to balls up and get in. But from a sharks perspective, it’s turned up wondering where the foods at. It’s the wide open ocean where foods hard to get. Then two weird creatures jump in and it needs to figure out what they are. Luckily Andy had a large camera to block the avalanche of razor blades heading for his crotch, and my tiny Harry Potter wand was just able to turn the shark away. But wow this was likely the most amazing experience I have had with a mature Mako. When they are this big they eat things way bigger than us, being swordfish and marlin, so the hours of amazing encounters that happened after this reflects how polite and smart this girl was. Riley Elliott Instagram - Two of the craziest things I have ever seen in one clip! Firstly and yes, that's a Mako shark POOPING! And secondly yes that's a Mako shark with a deformed jaw structure ;( It's coming up to @sharkweek on @discvoery and @discoveryplus July 24th sooooooo it's time to learn some interesting shark stuff. Shark Poo is rarely captured on camera, but as with all of us, it happens on the reg. Shark Poo is unique however in that unlike ours, it comes out super fine, almost like dust. This is because sharks are so highly evolved that they have a special digestive system called the Spiral Valve. Their intestinal tract is shorter than ours, so the Spiral Valve retains food in the intestine longer, digesting it more efficiently and thus extracting greater nutrients out of it, meaning that they do not need to eat as regularly as us to gather required energy!!!! How amazing. What's cooler is that shark poo is full of critical micronutrients like Iron, which stimulate Primary Production and thus tackle climate change through carbon absorption. So in short, shark poo is saving the planet :) The 2nd shark - not such a fun story. It has likely been caught by fishermen damaging its jaw via a hook and line. BUT the good news is this shark is amazingly still fit and healthy. Also if you see a shark with hooks in its mouth, it can actually be a good thing as it reflects the work of ethical fishermen who release sharks caught by accident, alive bysimply cutting the line. The shark lives on, the hooks rust out and everybody wins, because remember without shark poo climate change wins, and also that Primary Production gives us half the air we breathe! So a side note for those fishers who kill sharks for a $1 hook - is that worth half the air you breathe?
