Fiann Smithwick Instagram – This is a section of the best crinoid colony I’ve found on the Jurassic Coast. This piece measures about 2 feet across and is one of dozens of bits that will eventually fit back together into a colony that measures about 7 feet long!

There are dozens of individual crinoids in the colony, all preserved with golden pyrite on the surface, making it look almost robotic and metallic.

I’ve not got the space currently to fit it all back together, so this one is another fossil on the “to-do” pile!

Crinoids are animals closely related to star fish and sea urchins. This example is from the Early Jurassic, around 196 million years old.
