Fiann Smithwick Instagram – Prepping of a compressed ammonite fossil from the UK. I’m using a pneumatic tool (an air scribe) to carefully remove the rock that has covered the shell for 200 million years.

Some fossils are in really tough rock that is very tricky to remove. This one, however, is in really soft shale that comes away from the fossil with relative ease. It’s a very satisfying job when it goes like this!
