You make every day feel like an adventure. Pelé was one of the greatest to ever play the beautiful game. And as one of the most recognizable athletes in the world, he understood the power of sports to bring people together. Our thoughts are with his family and everyone who loved and admired him. Happy birthday, @MichelleObama. You make every day brighter — and somehow keep looking better! If you haven’t already, I hope you’ll take some time to watch Descendant on Netflix. It’s an important documentary from @HigherGroundMedia that shares the story of the descendants of the Clotilda, the last known ship carrying enslaved people from Africa. Last fall, visual artist @admdav captured tintype photos of these descendants which includes @Questlove and members of the community during the premiere of the documentary in Mobile, Alabama. He recently took one of me, too. These photos were inspired by the images taken of one of the last Clotilda survivors, Cudjoe Lewis. Descendant uncovers a painful part of our history while allowing families of the survivors to reclaim part of their story. Let me know what you think. Prime Minister @JacindaArdern has guided New Zealand through crises and seized opportunities by leading with foresight, integrity and empathy. Her country is better off because of her remarkable leadership—and the rest of us are too. The vicious, unjustified beating of Tyre Nichols and his ultimate death at the hands of five Memphis police officers is just the latest, painful reminder of how far America still has to go in fixing how we police our streets. Along with mourning Tyre and supporting his family, it’s up to all of us to mobilize for lasting change. To learn more about how communities can reimagine public safety to prevent both crime and injustice, go to www.obama.org/anguish-and-action. Black History Month shouldn’t be treated as though it is somehow separate from our collective American history—or boiled down to a compilation of greatest hits. This month should be more than just a commemoration of particular events. It’s about the shared experience of all Black Americans, high and low, famous and obscure, whose lives have shaped, challenged, and ultimately strengthened America. It’s about taking an unvarnished look at the past so we can create a better future. It’s a reminder of where we as a country have been so that we know where we need to go. We’re the enslaved people who quarried the stone to build the White House; the soldiers who fought for our nation’s independence, who fought to hold this union together, who fought for freedom for others around the world. We’re the scientists and inventors who helped unleash American innovation. We stand on the shoulders not only of giants, but also countless, nameless heroes who marched for equality and justice for all of us. And as long as we keep at it, as long as we don’t get discouraged, as long as we are out there fighting the good fight not just on one day, or one month, but every single day, and every single month, I have no doubt that we’re going to live up to that promise for young people like Clark Reynolds here, and the generations that will follow. Today marks two years since the Biden-Harris administration began. I’ve been reflecting on how fortunate we’ve been to have the steady leadership of @POTUS and @VP—and all the public servants working to deliver for folks across the country. They’ve strengthened the Affordable Care Act. They’ve lowered health care costs for seniors. They’ve capped the costs of insulin. They’ve distributed hundreds of millions of free vaccines. Under the leadership of the Biden-Harris administration, our economy has added more than 10.7 million jobs. President Biden worked across the aisle to rebuild our infrastructure and invest in American manufacturing. This means millions of jobs to fix our roads and bridges and install clean energy grids and broadband networks that will power the next few decades. And for the first time in nearly 30 years, Congress was able to pass significant gun safety legislation to help save lives. All this while solidifying our alliances and offering a guiding hand during a time of increasing global conflict and upheaval. I’m grateful for all that President Biden and Vice President Harris have done for the American people. And I know they’re just getting started. On what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we’re reminded that progress can move backward. And that means we’ve got to recommit to doing our part to protect and expand reproductive rights for families today — and for generations to come. People of goodwill can disagree on this issue, but I firmly believe that women everywhere should be able to control what happens with their own bodies. It shouldn’t be controversial to say that the most personal healthcare choices should be made by a woman and her doctor and not a bunch of mostly male politicians. So today, I hope that you’ll join with the activists who’ve been sounding the alarm on this issue for years — and act. Stand with them at a local protest. Volunteer with them on a campaign. Donate to their cause. And vote alongside them in every election for candidates who will support reproductive rights for generations to come. Michelle and I send our best wishes to families celebrating Kwanzaa this holiday season. Today begins a week-long celebration of African-American heritage and culture. As folks gather to light the Kinara, we hope you have a happy Kwanzaa. Michelle and I send our best wishes to families celebrating Kwanzaa this holiday season. The work the @ObamaFoundation did in 2022 makes me hopeful for the future. From supporting the next generation of leaders to strengthening democracy around the world, we’ve made a lot of progress this year. Take a look: 15 years ago today, our campaign won the Iowa caucuses. I’ll always be grateful to the people who organized across the state, and built the relationships that made it all possible. I recently sat down with six organizers to talk about that time and what they’ve been up to since. Today we pay tribute to the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. King, and reflect on the lessons he taught us. Thanks to everyone who joined the @ObamaFoundation to help pack food, write notes, and lend a hand in Chicago. And we’re proud to announce that applications for the second class of Voyagers are now open. We believe that if young people who are passionate about public service get financial aid for college, exposure to travel, and the networks they need to make a difference, the sky’s the limit. I hope you’ll apply by March 22. Click the link in my bio to learn more. There’s nothing that makes me more hopeful for the future than hearing from the young leaders who are changing the world for the better. That’s why I’m excited to announce that applications are now open for a new and expanded @ObamaFoundation Leaders USA program that will help even more young people put their idealism to work. We’re looking for determined and passionate emerging leaders from every corner of the country and across sectors, ages 24 to 45, who are already making an impact in the lives of people in their community. Our task today, tomorrow, and in the years to come is to continue to support the young people who are making progress on the biggest issues of our time and working to strengthen our democratic values. I hope you’ll take a moment to share this opportunity with the incredible changemakers you know and encourage them to apply by February 3 at the link in my bio.
