The latest book in the ‘Welcome to’ series is ‘Welcome to Sex’ – out May 17 🔥📚👏🏽
I’ve been reflecting on why there’s a need for this book.
Did you see @jessicahelenhill and @tosca_looby17’s show on SBS ‘ASKING FOR IT’? It started a lot of conversations about consent and sex.
It spelled out the need for clear-eyed, unflinching sex education. Particularly for young people. And while school sex ed continues to be timid and fear-based, hamstrung by religion and politics, PORN is taking ideas around sex and galloping our kids into new and dangerous territory. And let’s be honest: we’re not in control of that horse.
What’s the antidote?
The antidote to the shitty messages that kids get from porn is
SEX EDUCATION.
Porn can NOT be the only depictions and explanations of sex that our kids receive! No!
If schools can’t provide it, we parents can. And if we, as parents, don’t know the answers to all our kids’ questions and worries? Or if we’re worried we’ll get it wrong or say something embarrassing? We can consult trusted, researched resources.

MANY of the discussions around consent, the putrid effects of porn on real-world sex, and keeping us all safe in moments of intimacy – come back to teaching about sex and consent – AND STARTING THAT TEACHING YOUNG.
This book is coming out in 2 weeks. And I like to think of it as a bit like the book L-platers read before hitting the road. It is a book for young ones who aren’t necessarily practising any partnered sexual activities but who are curious enough to google – and whose parents would prefer this early (and influential!) info come from legitimate and researched sources who understand exactly who their audience is — rather than the unbounded limitlessness of the internet.
YES, it’s frank, and YES, it talks about stuff that parents might find embarrassing. Research shows that kids don’t necessarily want to talk about sex with their parents. It’s common. But parents? I hope this is a reassuring resource that you can slap down on your kid’s desk feeling confident that this info is setting them up for safer, happier lives.

And before you ask “what age, exactly?”
It depends where your kid is at in maturity. Roughly 10-15 years old but I’d be happy with a mature and smart 8-yo having a flick through.

It doesn’t mean our children have to be raised in the same culture 🙏🏼
And it doesn’t mean we have to passively let porn be our kids’ sex education.

Kemi asked what I hoped to get out of our POWER coaching session.
