More Jess! Her motorcycle is a pretty big facet of her in the comics, so I wanted to push how it could be incorporated into her character and design more. I got really inspired by moto-cross stunts and loved the idea that her bike could get infused into her fighting style with similar moves. I also started looking for ways she could have a full helmet that broke apart into a mask. Alright y’all, I’m rising back to life! Kicking us off, some Jessica Drew! I got brought into Across the Spider-verse in its earliest days as one of the first, if not the first, full-time character designer on the team. Jess was one of my earliest assignments, and she went through a lot of designs. Per the comics, the character is white, but after some initial passes, we started playing with race. Finally, I arrived at this version of her inspired by some incredible black women, wanting to really play up an athletic build and the impact of her hair. Also, since her motorcycle is a huge part of her, we worked to skew her outfit toward moto details in the ribbing, padding, and style of jacket. Our film “Steps” has been announced! It’s a flip on a Cinderella story, focused on the step-sisters and their journeys to find their own dreams. “Our step-sisters are a pair of young Asian immigrants to a fairytale world, and their journey navigating the pressures of their kingdom to ultimately arrive at their true dream is a story that resonates deep inside my heart,” said Tzue. “Especially in light of the terrible acts of erasure against the Asian community, I am grateful to be working with this incredible team on a project where I feel so seen. We can’t wait to bring Steps to the world!” We’re working away on it, and hope you’ll love what we make!
