Nadezhda Tolokonnikova Instagram - This art is a hammer that shapes reality. 2023, series of 23 works. “Humor was another of the soul’s weapons in the fight for self-preservation. It is well known that humor can afford an aloofness and an ability to rise above any situation, even if only for a few seconds” - Viktor Frankl, Man’s search for meaning. I incorporate needles and sewing machine parts - they represent my experiences of forced labor in the camp. During that time, I would have dreams of receiving new sets of needles and machine parts, only to wake up to the harsh reality of continuing to sew on old, unsafe equipment. I endured injuries and excruciating pain while sewing, including a traumatic incident where a needle penetrated my finger and caused profuse bleeding, yet I was compelled to persist without proper medical care. The use of red splashes in my artwork represents the blood that stained my worktable at the factory. I incorporate teddy bears into my work, penetrating them with needles and presenting them as worn and dirty. The teddy bears encapsulate the innocence and vulnerability I once possessed, now marred and broken by the oppressive forces at play.

Acrylic, textile and faux fur on canvas 20 x 16 in + digital certificate of authenticity ‍I use textile because it was traditionally labeled as low art/crafts, female work – and because I was forced to work with textile in my penal colony. Splashes of acrylic paint on the fabric are reminiscent of my 🩸 getting spilled on police and military uniforms that I was sewing in prison, injured by old and outdated equipment. This piece is a reflection on PTSD, the courage required to face hope, and to reject fear.

PUTIN’S ASHES IN SANTA FE 🔥 Ever since I was 17 I had a dream of taking over the whole building and creating my cute and dangerous world there. It was impossible in my home country, because anything with Pussy Riot’s participation would get shut down immediately. It left me feel toxic, poisonous, rotten, I wouldn’t dare to dream or to build, always being silenced and prohibited, an alien in my own country. I’m bringing my teenage dream of taking over a building to Santa Fe, to @container_turnercarroll – CONTAINER’s Tonya and Michael I’ve met at the opening of Putin’s Ashes at @jeffreydeitchgallery. @judy.chicago told Tonya and Michael that they should travel from Santa Fe to LA to see the exhibit, and they did (!!) Putin’s Ashes is an evolving project. I’m bringing 150 new artworks to Santa Fe.
