That’s it. I didn’t feel how I knew I needed to feel for a summit day like that. @benjaminvedrines was going strong, and he probably could have done all the work to get us both to the summit, but then what? The descent is not straight down; there’s a long up & down traverse first. No fixed ropes of course, as we’d climbed up with just 60m of rope between us. There was no big track and no other climbers on the route: just Ben and I. That’s the beauty of climbing a route like this in a style like this. The beauty and the cruelty of it. I’ve only ever been here before in winter, but I’m more than happy to see and experience this mountain now in the summer. Will it be easier? I very much doubt it but we shall see. To be on an 8000m peak climb, yet with a base camp on a beautiful green meadow full of life is both unusual and a treat for the sense. I was reminded of home by multiple groups of visiting donkeys, and reminded of how far into the wild we were when I saw a wolf (3rd slide!) for the first time in my life. Flying. It’s something humans dream of. Being able to move through the air with the speed and grace normally reserved for creatures with wings. On this expedition, @benjaminvedrines and I used our wings more than I could have imagined. We took off from some special places and flew back to base camp after all but one of our forays onto #NangaParbat herself or the smaller peaks around.
