For sure this feels a bit different now. @mike_d_arnold ran out of time here, so being without him here now is quite a change for me, but I am lucky and can still team up with Boris Langenstein and @tiphaineduperier here. So, I won’t be alone in waiting for my chance to climb this beautiful mountain. In the meantime, I would very much appreciate if someone could please send us a good weather window! 😉🙏🏻 #neverstopexploring @thenorthfacede @thenorthface @julbo_eyewear @leki.ski.outdoor #himalayas #expedition #NangaParbat
Here are some more photos from our recent Nanga Parbat expedition. These are from the lower section of the Schell route, below the ridge at 6000m. In order to avoid the rockfall which started as soon as the sun hit the Rupal face and could be quite intense, we had to do some very early alpine starts. I’m not a huge fan of alpine starts but it’s better to wake up early than to be bowled off the mountain by a rock hurtling at you from above. . 🎥: @insta360 #X3 . #NangaParbat #Alpinestyle #noO2 #neverstopexploring @thenorthfacede

What should you eat when you’re attempting a big mountain? How do you cook it up there in a tiny tent? It’s actually a bit more tricky than you might think. I’ve tried so many things over the years and in this week’s #MountainMentor episode I share what food and food prep looks like for me right now on a big mountain. I’m curious to hear what your favourite mountain foods are. Let me know in the comments. I’m sure everyone prefers a summit post to a “turning around”post….believe me, so do I! But actually, this time, I’m so proud of what we achieved I’m as happy to share it here as I would be if we’d summitted. Sticking to a pure style of climbing is worth more to me than reaching a summit. Huge thanks to #Boris and @tiphaineduperier for allowing me to join their team, but also to @mike_d_arnold who put in the work earlier on but was unable to stay for the final push. Thanks too, to Ehsan and Nisar of @adventuretourspakistan who organised logistics flawlessly. I’ll be sharing more footage, details and thoughts about this climb in the coming days. . #neverstopexploring @thenorthfacede @thenorthfaceuk #nangaparbat #alpinestyle #noO2 #nofixropes #expedition #8000 #advancedmountainkit #amk @julbo_eyewear @leki.ski.outdoor
Day 4: this was the planned summit day, from our camp at 7400m on the Rupal face, crossing over to the Diamir side, along and up to the summit and back. Again it sounds not so bad in words, but in reality this route is incredibly long, complex and challenging. Everything feels much, much bigger on this mountain despite that it’s not one of the highest 8000m peaks. Further along the ridge from our camp but at an altitude of about 7400m @tiphaineduperier , #Boris and I crossed over onto the Diamir side of the mountain which is west facing. From this point all you see is the never ending traverse ahead of you, undulating up and down across the upper slopes of the Diamir face. We kept moving for several hours breaking through the snow up to the knee with each step. At about 7550m we decided that with these slow, exhausting conditions it was clear that we didn’t really have a chance. The summit was still hours away, and the way back would be just as relentless and long, with the same small uphills to overcome but in a much more exhausted state. We turned around and even from where we were, it was a long way back to our tents at 7400m on the other side. Judging by how exhausted we were when we got back to camp, it was clear that we made the right decision and I’m incredibly proud of how far we got, how hard we tried and the decisions we made. Far from being disappointed, this experience has galvanised my desire to climb Nanga Parbat in this style. Hopefully one day it’ll work out. . #neverstopexploring @thenorthfacede @julbo_eyewear @leki.ski.outdoor

Day 3: one thing that was challenging about this year’s climb was just how unstable and changeable the weather was. On this morning @tiphaineduperier , #Boris and I woke up to a cloudless sky and zero wind. I was even tempted to abort the summit attempt just to be able to fly down from 7000m! 😉 But the desire to try for the summit was stronger so I continued up with the other. Within a couple of hours the weather had turned quite nasty and gusty so we were pretty happy to get the tents pitched beneath a large rock at 7400m and hunker down for a few hours. . @thenorthfacede #neverstopexploring
So good to be back here! From BC to the mountains it’s one of the best places for me to be and it’s even better to share it with my @thenorthface team mate @mike_d_arnold Despite some very unstable weather so far, we’ve climbed, skied, flew plenty and now just hoping for some more favorable and consistent weather for a summit attempt! #neverstopexploring @thenorthfacede #himalayas #expedition #tentwithaview #NangaParbat @leki.ski.outdoor @julbo_eyewear #outdoors

Day 2: now that I’m writing it down, it doesn’t seem like a big deal: from 6000m to 6800m, relatively easy terrain along the ridge, over some snow slopes and a rock band to a safe tent spot below a big rock. But…in reality, with the deep snow conditions we had, it was a hell of a challenge to break trail and it felt like a really long way. Teamwork makes the dream work tho, and @tiphaineduperier , #Boris and I made slow but steady progress taking turns to get to our goal at 6800m. . @thenorthfacede #neverstopexploring @thenorthfaceuk @julbo_eyewear @leki.ski.outdoor
Day 1 – @tiphaineduperier , #Boris and I knew we needed a cold clear night for the lower part of the route to freeze so we could have nice firm, snow and no rockfall. The first hour was pretty perfect, but then a random thunderstorm came in making us doubt our chances. Nonetheless we kept going and it paid off. The storm blew through and we made it up to our first camp at 6000m on the ridge in near perfect snow conditions albeit peppered with a bit of thunder and lightning and snow showers 😬. . #neverstopexploring @thenorthfacede #amk #advancedmountainkit @thenorthfaceuk #expedition #nangaparbat #alpinestyle #noO2 #noFixropes @julbo_eyewear @leki.ski.outdoor
