Gul Panag Instagram – Gül in Gülhane 💁🏻‍♀️ …when I was in school, studying in Zambia, my maths teacher, Ms Guy ( someone please help me find her) one day told me that GUL is pronounced gal. Like गल. Consider changing it to Gül- the ü is like the ‘you’ sound – as in bull. She was British. Ms Guy. And I suppose they know their peculiar language better than us. She also taught me the difference between Miss and Ms. But that’s for another post. Then, many years later, I was in Germany. Where ü is again extensively used. Again the same conversation happened. Someone said if you want your name to be truly pronounced the way it should be.l, it should have the alphabet U with two dots on it. Ü Some years later, I was in Turkey, where Gül is a very common name. And to be able to pronounce it the way it is, which is a rose here, or a flower in Persian, one needs the two dots on top of the U. And so when I came back to India, after the trip, in 2017, my charming jeweller friend, Tarun from @navrattangk , made me a beautiful pendant with Gül.😀 Like a name plate. IYKYK.
