This whole thing just makes me sick. I have this anger boiling inside of me and I don’t know where to put it.
The Taliban has announced a ban on ALL female university students. The sisters in this photograph had, when I met them over the summer, a sliver of hope that a miracle would actually happen. And the words I heard not just from them but from just about everyone “No one cares about us. For the international community we are less significant than animals” are just so achingly, painfully true.
At the time that we met, back in June, their lives had stagnated, mostly spent indoors. They were lovely, smart, eloquent. The eldest had studied economics at university & recently graduated before the Taliban took over. There was a time when she wanted to start her own business.
The middle sister was waiting to hear if she was going to be able to sit for the university exam. She wanted to study law and international relations, but she had shelved the law aspiration with the Taliban coming to power. Back then, the Taliban was allowing women to pursue a higher education, just on separate days than male students.
The youngest, at 15, was the most distraught at the time. Female high school students were barred from going to class. She just sobbed and sobbed unable to put her emotions into words that made any sense to her. It was all too much.
Back then, they still had hope in their hopelessness. They – and others – said the Taliban would open schools if the international community recognized the Taliban. And surely the international community would figure out a way, if not recognition, then something. Surely the international community would not allow girls to be weaponized in this way.
And yet here we are. As it stands half of the country is denied an education beyond primary school. Its disgusting. And how this all came to be is even more revolting.
