This is the face of 53 – which I turned today. But 53 years ago, my selfish streak started when I committed the crime of being born on my brother Don’s birthday. For his first three years, Donald enjoyed his own birthday, and all the inherent attention that comes with it. Then, like the dawning of a dark age came the annus horribilis of 1970, when for my brother’s 4th birthday, he received the gift of an attention hogging time terrorist, who took up permanent residence on his special day, absorbing it as his own. And ever since then, Don has had to share the only gift nobody can ever take away from you with an insatiable black hole of a brother who sucks away all the attention. So Happy Birthday not to me, but to my beloved brother Donald, my favorite audience member, who made me realize I was funny in the first place and instilled in me the only class I’ve ever exhibited; whose sense of humor and musical taste influenced my own; whose Wacky Packages I stole and who gave me my first Mad Magazines; who always augmented my meager finances during my late teens and early 20’s. My 53rd birthday is a week from today – so naturally, I’ve been reflecting on where the hell I’ve been for half a century. So here are some images of the young me amidst the backdrop of the super sounds of the 70’s!
I grew up the youngest of 3 kids in Highlands, NJ (a mere mile and change from @smodcastlecinemas) with my sister @virginia_in_vienna and my brother Don, – both older than me by 5 and 4 years respectively. My Father Donald worked for the @uspostalservice and my Mother @donsgirlgrace was a homemaker. We were Catholic (hence #Dogma) and went to church every Sunday. In an effort to keep Dad from “going postal”, my Mom found a way for our lower middle class family to vacation every Easter break – including a trip to Hollywood and the @chinesetheatres when I was 9 (where @jaymewes and I would stick our handprints and footprints 4 decades later).
If you’ve been into any of my art over the last 30 years, the folks in these images are at the root of everything I’ve ever made. Conversely, if you’re not a fan? Then blame these wonderful people who helped shape me and my way of thinking. #KevinSmith
