I’ve heard all kinds of answers. But one stands out above the rest: “Rock & Roll” The esteemed astrophysicist who gave this answer has a point. Our ability to collaborate and create shared experiences with the purpose of emotionally transporting others into new worlds and perspectives is… kind of magic. Whether it’s the Mona Lisa, Beyoncé’s albums, or the Pyramids of Giza, what exists on Earth, and perhaps not anywhere else, is human creativity and the ways that self-expression impacts the species at large. It’s the “thing we do.” Theoretically, *that* is what aliens would be most in awe of: Human creativity and collaboration. I mused on this and more in last weekend’s newsletter — sign up @ the link in bio to read before my next edition drops on Sunday! 💌 p.s. On July 15th I’ll be hosting my first ever FREE ONLINE WATERCOLOR & CREATIVITY CLASS taught by the talented Bindi Desai (@create__d)!! 🎨 When it comes to watercolor, I’m a beginner (an extremely obsessed one) and until this year had never taken a lesson 🤫 I’d been a fan of Bindi’s work on IG, so when she DM’d me, saying she offered classes, I signed up immediately:) Since then, we’ve met every week, and I am so grateful to Bindi for everything she teaches me — and now for everything that she will teach you! The biggest revelation these last few months: pursuing a hobby is an opportunity to try, fail, and manage the feelings that arise when attempting something new. Again and again I see my best results happen when I stay playful, loosen up, and enjoy the process. But more importantly, I’ve realized that the more I practice “being brave” with paper and paint, the more easily I can handle uncomfortable feelings that come up when I am being called upon to “be brave” in life. The good news is that Bindi has empowered me to create work I’m proud of even though I’m a beginner, even when I’m feeling hesitant about a new skill or frustrated by my lack of experience. Her process allows me to develop tools to work on overriding fear and doubt — and the more I practice being in this state, the better. So in this workshop, Bindi will teach us how to paint an abstract piece and afterward we’ll have a relaxed Q&A session to address creative stressors and strategies for overcoming them. It’ll be a chill, judgment-free space to immerse yourself in the world of watercolor 😌 If this sounds at all interesting, please RSVP to our free workshop “How to Be Brave (In Life & Watercolor)” on Saturday July 15. You can sign up today at the link in bio 🔗 Looking forward to painting with you! ❤️ 📸: Andie Jane (@andiejjane) #BryceDallasHoward #WatercolorArt #CreativeFlow #ArtTherapy #BeBrave Happy #WorldWatercolorMonth! While a lot of glitz & glamor is associated with Hollywood, the reality is that the majority of professionals involved in entertainment are working class, and in the last 15+ years the entire industry has felt the impact of an unsustainable business model. There are a number of labor movements currently in effect, and the more I learn about them, the more I can see the similarities. Each of these movements play a central role in ensuring economic & human rights protections – from @teamsters fighting for a fair deal w/ UPS, to hotel workers in LA, to @wgaeast & @writersguildwest writers and many other groups organizing for a liveable wage. My grandparents Rance and Jean Howard never found fortune or fame but worked hard to support their family for 60 years as professional actors. Meeting health insurance requirements and making ends meet on a yearly basis without residuals would have been impossible. As a 3rd generation actor and proud union member, I know it’s true when our leadership says, “A strike is an instrument of last resort…. they have left us with no alternative.” There is no future in a business where 87% of SAG-AFTRA members are unable to meet required health insurance minimums. (Even I, who many would perceive as having a successful career, have had many years where I did not meet the required insurance minimum!) Current minimum wages make it difficult to keep up with the cost of living and the dwindling of residuals make it even more difficult to stay afloat between jobs. And while everyone’s careers are unique, for working professionals to make a sustainable living in the entertainment industry, they must be fairly compensated – and this is what the unions are fighting for. If you are looking for actionable ways to support the movement, swipe ⬅️ for ideas – and if you are comfortably able, @sagaftrafound & @alifeinthearts are accepting donations to support creatives in financial need. 📸: Freddy Waff, @deardarlingdesignstudio/ @creativeenabler, @sagaftrafound, @wgaeast The world is changing and the labor movements of today will determine how we move forward, long into the future. It comes and goes, but I’ve always felt insecure about this because I hate that it makes me seem like I’m nervous – and maybe I am a little nervous!? I know I will be during the class. Tomorrow there will be a camera ON MY GLISTENING AND SHAKING HANDS and I will be painting as a BEGINNER in front of everyone. It’s gonna take a little bravery on my part. The good news is that Bindi, my watercolor teacher, has helped me work with my tremor so it actually enhances the organic nature of the painting. Instead of feeling frustrated by it, I’ve learned techniques to help and it’s allowing me to discover what my unique style might be. Am I nervous to have my tremor and sweaty hands on full display during this workshop? YES. Am I gonna work through and embrace it? ABSOLUTELY. And I would love for you to join:) Sign up for this free online watercolor & creativity class, taught by Bindi and hosted by yours truly ✨Happening THIS Saturday, July 15! We’re getting close to capacity so RSVP at the link in bio 🔗 See you tomorrow! ❤️ #BryceDallasHoward #WatercolorArt #CreativeFlow #ArtTherapy #BeBrave This might be counterintuitive, but for me it’s a GOOD sign when you aren’t the smartest and most experienced person in the room. In fact, I actively look for projects and opportunities where I know there will be a significant learning curve and mentors to set an example. Why? When the pressure is off to “know everything” – when I can lean into my curiosity – I ask more questions and ultimately walk away with far more skill and experience than if I were just trying to execute perfectly or fake expertise. And what’s great is that I carry these skills and experiences with me for the rest of my career. What you can learn from others, even if it doesn’t exactly relate to “your job,” greatly informs your path moving forward. In the conversations you have with other collaborators, in the work you make and your confidence with making it, and in the tools you acquire along the way. Your curiosity will get you far! Thank you Epic Games for the chance to tell this story and talk about virtual production in filmmaking. Any chance I get to geek out with others over the creative process and share sources of inspiration, it’s always an honor 😄 Commit to curiosity by leaving a ✨in the comments! #PetesDragon #EpicGames #UnrealEngine #VirtualProduction TagsBryce Dallas Howard Previous articleNULL A.
