Danai Gurira Instagram – “Shattering stereotypes requires defiance and a willingness to live in discomfort.”
#Flashback to when I had a deeply insightful week at @cannes_lions in partnership with the @un_stereotypealliance and @unwomen. The week kicked off at the annual Goal 5 Dinner where I spoke on a panel with @dr_adanna and @sabrinaelba where we discussed the commitment & bold action needed to accelerate progress to achieve SDG 5 Gender Equality. The question I posed to a room of executives was – We hear women over and over again being asked “what needs to be done?” as if the evidence isn’t abundantly clear! It is time to hear from the C-suite, those decision-makers who define what we see and do not see, whose stories get to be told, and whether equity becomes the norm and not a passing phase. What are they doing, what have they done & when do we see tangible results?
The next day I took the main stage & then shared it with cultural expert @imjessweiner as we explored the importance of being agents of change against stereotypes. My key word for that day & for this campaign as a whole: CURIOSITY. It is impossible to stereotype and practice EMPATHETIC CURIOSITY simultaneously. I challenged us all to try. It doesn’t work. In this Information Age, are we letting truncated soundbites define our understanding of each other? Because that causes stereotyping. The #SayNothingChangeNothing campaign helps counter this as it seeks to equip us with the tools needed to steer ourselves and others away from harmful stereotyping.
To wrap out an incredible week, Jess & I connected again at the @interpublicipg Don’t Whisper, SHOUT Inclusion Breakfast where we heard from incredible change-makers and encouraged all the powerful culture leaders in the room to think about what has scared them the most during these events, made them the most uncomfortable, & how to navigate their own change from there & find their voice in the pursuit of the end of stereotypes.

Danai Gurira Instagram – I’m excited to announce the launch of the #SayNothingChangeNothing campaign with the #UnstereotypeAlliance and @unwomen.
We’ve all had moments when we wished we did better. When we stood by and watched stereotypes play out and said nothing. But when we keep quiet nothing changes.
Today, I’m sharing my story of what I wished I had said when I came face-to-face with a stereotype, and I want to hear yours — what do YOU wish you had said? Share your #iwishihadsaid videos, tag @un_stereotypealliance and help start a movement to inspire others to speak out against stereotypes.

Danai Gurira Instagram – For this edition of #LoveOurGirls, I’m highlighting my trip to Kenya where I was able to visit the first-ever Kenyan carbon-neutral footprint safari @emboocamp and had the pleasure of being guided through the Maasai Mara by a couple of outstanding young Maasai women. This was such an exciting Love Our Girls moment because it breaks stereotypes in terms of our involvement in the conservation realm. I was also able to learn more about their work and involvement in their communities. I’m so excited for them to share their own experiences, stories, and what they have accomplished with you.
I also visited the @maraelephantproject, whose mission is protecting elephants and their habitats, and seeks a stable and healthy elephant population co-existing peacefully with people across the greater Mara ecosystem. During my time there, I met an astounding agronomist and leader in her field, Abigael, and learned about the groundbreaking work she and her team are doing.
I’m really excited for you to meet these incredible women and hear their powerful feminist perspectives. Enjoy! #EmbooRiver #EmbooCamps #MaasaiMara
Danai Gurira Instagram – “1 in 5 Americans identify with having a disability and yet when you look at the statistics of how many disabled characters there are on TV, on stage, and in movies nothing about that represents what is real.” – Ali Stroker
For the latest installment of #LoveOurGirls, I had the honor of sitting down with a Girl We Love – Tony Award-winning actress @alistroker, who played Lady Anne opposite me in the Shakespeare in the Park production of “Richard III” last summer. While our conversation was filled with so much joy and laughter, we also took a hard look at the realities of disability representation in the arts and how much further we still have to go.
Ali and I were so fortunate that for our production of “Richard III,” inclusivity was front and center as our director, Tony Award nominee Robert O’Hara, populated the stage with an incredibly diverse group of actors – including not only Ali, but also deaf actress Monique Holt who plays the Duchess of York, to name a few. I call our production radically inclusive and I hope that we can continue down this path until inclusivity both on stage and screen is the status quo.
If you’d like to learn more about a few organizations that are doing great work for people with disabilities, head to my Stories! “Richard III” is streaming now on #GreatPerformancesPBS as part of its “Broadway’s Best” lineup 👑
