I was scrolling through some Queer as Folk Season 2 pics and spotted these from our QAF nightclub Babylon. (I do realize the green dance floor lighting makes us somewhat Incredible Hulk-like.) Felt like appropriate end of summer fare to share. The dance floor and the club are long and enduring legacies of our journey as gay people. Going back to the secret, clandestine clubs where we were first able to meet and find each other. (The first gay bar I went to in my home town of Tampa was a cinderblock building that had no windows.) The dance floor meant freedom and play and celebration while also being the source of some challenge. Connection and yet disconnection. The drinks and intoxicants, while a key part of our freedom and celebration, for some of us also became a crutch and, sometimes, an addiction. But that’s another (important) story. Regardless, the dance floor will always be one of those places we can express our freedom, our celebration, and our love. As it was for Ben, Michael, and the gang. And, as in Babylon, the thumpa thumpa continues. #QueerAsFolk #DanceFloor #Connection #Freedom #QAF #BestGayLife Reflections from the dance floor as summer wanes. Hope everyone’s having a great holiday weekend. #Sunset #Grateful @bdstevens1 @alexcaps Provincetown, Massachusetts Dinner on the boat off Provincetown. Hope everyone’s having a great holiday weekend. #Sunset #Grateful @bdstevens1 @alexcaps Provincetown, Massachusetts My dad was a staunch and proud Teamster. From the time I was a boy, he used to say, “If you don’t know your rights, you don’t have any.” As an individual, a worker has very limited ability to bargain on her or his own behalf. However, collectively, when we come together as a union, we can bargain for and, when necessary, fight for our rights. Corporations aren’t inherently bad. They are a huge and vital part of our economy and our collective well-being. However, corporations are not constructed to consider fairness, unless profitability requires it. They exist solely to return profit to the shareholders. Whatever it takes to do that, by whatever means. Even if it includes undervaluing and underpaying the very source of its revenue. In response, since the earliest days of our country, unions have been essential to give voice to the otherwise voiceless. The vast majority of actors in our union have second jobs to support doing what they love, their passion. The vast majority cannot reach the $27,000 a year earning requirement to qualify for health insurance and have to find another way to get it. The number of those able to qualify for health insurance has continually been dropping because of the diminishing pay structures and the inequity that streaming has created. The struggle we’re in the midst of is quite honestly for the existence of our profession. The system needs to be reconfigured to correct for the imbalances that are happening and for those that are coming in the form of AI. In reality, this is a universal struggle for all of us as a people, union or not. Please support and stand with us. At some level, it really does apply to us all. Yours in solidarity. #SAGAFTRAStrong #UnionStrong @sagaftra (Grateful to walk the picket line here with my dear friend and #QueerAsFolk cast mate @michelle_clunie.) Paramount Studios Loneliness is a feeling many LGBTQ folks contend with. It can result in part from the legacy of hiding and resulting tendency to isolate that was conditioned into us from an early age. Fortunately, there are definitive steps we can take to move beyond loneliness toward connection and community. In the last video on the subject, I talked about a first step being cultivating a greater recognition of this vast community we’re a part of and the potential availability for connection it offers. As I share in this video, a next step for moving beyond loneliness toward connection involves shifting our mindset. As a result of the deeper questioning of our value, some of us might even wonder secretly whether others actually want connection with us. It’s a question I’ve certainly dealt with at different points in my life. Part of shifting this mindset is coming to trust that, on the other side of that misconception, there are indeed others who do want friendship, partnership, or community. I’m grateful we get to be a part of that for each other. In the video after this, I’ll talk about the next steps to take — in addition to shifting our mindset — for moving beyond loneliness. Love you all. #GayLifeCoaching #Loneliness #Connection #Community #Friendship #Partnership #LGBTQ #BestGayLife One of the things I appreciate about social media is the opportunity it provides to be and stay connected.
