Caption : Thirty years ago this week, on April 25th 1993, between 800,000 and 1,000,000 LGBTQ+ folk and allies descended on Washington, DC to march for our equality. I was in my final semester of law school at Georgetown when the March on Washington happened. One of the main tenets of the march’s platform called for (in addition to the repeal of the sodomy laws which would happen 10 years later in 2003) the establishment of an equality law of the sort we are discussing today. I was taking the course “Sexual Orientation and the Law” at the time with my law professor, Chai Feldbloom, who, along with Senator Ted Kennedy, had in fact introduced an LGBT civil rights bill to Congress multiple times. It was somewhat symbolic then, because we weren’t yet at a place to have such equality reflected to that extent in the law. In her class, we were using the first ever textbook on the subject, “Sexual Orientation of the Law,“ which was written by Chai and hadn’t yet been published. So we were using photocopies of galleys from the publisher of what would eventually become that textbook. I’ll share more sometime about my experience of that class and my conversations with Chai at the time. Suffice it to say, the March on Washington was a deeply moving and powerful moment in our history as a people. (Matthew had come back on the show after focusing on recovery and things were a little tentative on set. In my brief interaction with him, he was quite kind.) Caption : Reflections from the dance floor as summer wanes. I was scrolling through some Queer as Folk Season 2 pics and spotted these from our QAF nightclub Babylon. (I do realize the green dance floor lighting makes us somewhat Incredible Hulk-like.) Felt like appropriate end of summer fare to share. The dance floor and the club are long and enduring legacies of our journey as gay people. Going back to the secret, clandestine clubs where we were first able to meet and find each other. (The first gay bar I went to in my home town of Tampa was a cinderblock building that had no windows.) The dance floor meant freedom and play and celebration while also being the source of some challenge. Connection and yet disconnection. The drinks and intoxicants, while a key part of our freedom and celebration, for some of us also became a crutch and, sometimes, an addiction. But that’s another (important) story. Regardless, the dance floor will always be one of those places we can express our freedom, our celebration, and our love. As it was for Ben, Michael, and the gang. Caption : Fitness is a life journey. While aesthetics obviously play a part, it’s also essential for our state of mind, our sense of well-being. And later in life as the body shifts, because our musculature is literally what supports us physically, it’s vital to make fitness a priority in order to sustain our frame and our mobility. If it’s not something you’re currently making time for, please do it if only to help make sure that you have the underlying muscular support to have the best later years that you can physically. On another note, as I look at this photo, I remember the young actor I was and the occasional comments some would make at the time that I could play Superman. I remember how quickly I would discount the idea in my head and laugh it off outwardly, because, as a then-closeted gay actor, I couldn’t process the prospect of playing a superhero as a possibility. It’s one of the reasons playing Supergirl‘s father Zor-el years later was such a sweet full circle moment. While I couldn’t fathom as a young gay actor being considered to play those kinds of roles, getting to inhabit that world later in life was a very cool thing. And a heck of a lot of fun. Caption : Kicking off the weekend. Focusing on fitness feels good. And definitely takes making the time for it. We often think of it only in the present context, meaning how we look and feel now. But it’s as much about longevity and the ability to support living our best lives physically going forward. I started on a new nutrition plan as well (after going a little astray) which is, of course, the other big factor in the longevity equation. Once we get over the hump of making these factors consistent and integral parts of our lives, doing them really kicks in and (thankfully!) becomes much easier. Caption : I was recently discussing the concept of being in one’s prime. A certain age range was referenced that some might consider a “physical prime.“ But being in one’s prime is a relative notion. To have the gift of years and to have done the work to see through one’s learned limitations and comprehend life’s deeper meanings, for example, puts a person in a version of prime that lets them love life in a way they couldn’t before. I certainly couldn’t appreciate life as fully when I was on #Friends or #QueerasFolk. I didn’t have the skill set I do these years later. Caption : I’m sad to hear of the passing of @bettymwhite today. What a wonderful life fully lived. So many people touched and impacted. When I had the good fortune to work with her on “Hot in Cleveland,” we did what’s called a speed through in the makeup room on taping day. A speed through is essentially the process of whipping through the lines of an entire episode to refresh them quickly before going live in front of an audience. Because it was only the third episode, everyone was especially energized as the show was still finding its feet. Betty’s “date” for the episode was none other than the amazing Carl Reiner, who passed away last year. As we all sat in a circle zipping through our lines, one of my fellow guest stars leaned over and, referring to Betty and Carl, whispered, “Can you believe we’re sitting here doing a speed through with two of the progenitors of comedy?” For indeed we were. And indeed they were. When we were about to start shooting, Betty came in and found a chair next to me just off the set where we were both to be making our entrances. She sighed a big sigh as she sat, and I said, “How are you doing?” She didn’t miss a beat and asked, “Is it time to go home yet?” I laughed, and we chatted for a bit. I’ll never forget the experience. I guess now it really was time to go home. Rest well, Betty.

Caption : This month is the 25th Anniversary of Disney’s Hercules! And with it comes many memories. Playing the famed Herc was one of my very first jobs in Hollywood. From beginning to end, I worked on the film for a period spanning 18 months, on and off, memorizing Tate Donovan‘s classic, humorously stuttering dialogue (pre-recorded and given to me to learn on cassette tapes) and infusing the scenes with my own comedic interpretation. As new as I was to the process, my good fortune in getting to work with some of Disney’s most legendary animators was clear to me. Directors John Musker and Ron Clements (already legends going into the process as the director/creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin), and all the team, were beyond amazing to work with. Granted, by the end of the run, the Hercules outfit I donned each session was showing signs of its prolonged use. In particular, Hercules’ hair, which had started as a well formed wig, ultimately morphed into the hairspray-infused helmet you see in the photo above. But nothing could dampen the joy I felt at getting to be a part of this incredible classic, acting out the many fights and scenes, action-filled and romantic, as the animators worked their Olympian magic to create this timeless homage to the Greek demigod. Huge shout out to @michelledanse, my Megara cohort, who helped bring that character to life so beautifully. Herc is forever in my heart, and having gotten to work on that project will always remain for me one of those truly cool, utterly unique Hollywood experiences. From beginning to end, I worked on the film for a period spanning 18 months, on and off, memorizing Tate Donovan‘s classic, humorously stuttering dialogue (pre-recorded and given to me to learn on cassette tapes) and infusing the scenes with my own comedic interpretation. As new as I was to the process, my good fortune in getting to work with some of Disney’s most legendary animators was clear to me. Directors John Musker and Ron Clements (already legends going into the process as the director/creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin), and all the team, were beyond amazing to work with. Granted, by the end of the run, the Hercules outfit I donned each session was showing signs of its prolonged use. In particular, Hercules’ hair, which had started as a well formed wig, ultimately morphed into the hairspray-infused helmet you see in the photo above. But nothing could dampen the joy I felt at getting to be a part of this incredible classic, acting out the many fights and scenes, action-filled and romantic, as the animators worked their Olympian magic to create this timeless homage to the Greek demigod. Huge shout out to @michelledanse, my Megara cohort, who helped bring that character to life so beautifully. Herc is forever in my heart, and having gotten to work on that project will always remain for me one of those truly cool, utterly unique Hollywood experiences. Caption : Connection, intimacy, and community come in many forms. When I think of those things, these beautiful folks always come to mind — for who they are as people and for the community of connection they (and we) had the opportunity to portray through the characters we played on QAF. Many of us gay folks may have, at some point, created community by default, out of our old limited thinking. As a result, we might have people around us who aren’t as supportive of our dreams, goals, and visions as they could be. In fact, sometimes they’re the opposite of supportive. Yet when we create community consciously and out of the more awakened parts of us, we find ourselves increasingly surrounded by those who want the best for us — folks with whom we can be open and honest and vulnerable and intimate. Given where we come from, this isn’t always the easiest thing to achieve. That’s a big part of why I started BEST GAY LIFE Group Coaching. Making the effort to keep “waking up” to our inherent value and to creating this supportive community of folks will pay off in countless ways throughout our lives. Caption : My heart is full of gratitude today at turning eighteen years sober off drugs and alcohol. Eighteen years ago, I had no idea the gifts that would come from taking this journey. Some overt and obvious, some nuanced and almost imperceptible. Maybe more than anything, it’s this deep, profound feeling of thankfulness for the feeling and experience of life that the sober journey offers. It’s not easy to describe, but I’m blessed to have it. The folks I get to travel the path with are, at the same time, gifts of the experience and reasons I’m still on this road. For, as much as there can sometimes be a pull to isolate or to “do this on your own,” life always happens with others. It can. I’ve realized it’s wise to let it/them in. Thank you to my fellows and my ever-shifting concept of a higher power for this journey and the life it continues to offer.

Caption : One of the greatest challenges LGBTQ+ folks can face is countering the negative self-talk that sometimes occurs in our heads or even in the ways we refer to ourselves openly. Recognizing that this self-criticism stems from brainwashed notions that don’t express the truth of our inherent equality isn’t always easy. Though learning to wake up from the deception is certainly a journey of self-discovery that’s worth undertaking. And rather than turn that negativity outward from ourselves toward each other, as can also happen, overcoming this flawed thinking is something we can actually help one another with. Caption : I was shooting some episodes just as the Writers’ Strike started, so I didn’t share about it then. (More on that later but had a wonderful time as always.) Meanwhile, as we actors are reviewing and discussing ratification of the latest contract proposal, I wanted to share some gratitude for this craft. I joined the Screen Actors Guild in 1984 when I did my second national commercial as a kid. The first commercial was in 5th grade. (I’ll elaborate on that another day as well, but I remember my great-grandmother, a former Broadway actress and early member of Actors Equity, being thrilled that I’d joined the thespian ranks!) I’ve been a proud SAG (now SAG-AFTRA) member ever since. And, to this day, I get a little giddy when stepping into my dressing room/trailer before heading to hair and make up and ultimately the set. Getting to do something I love is a gift I don’t take for granted. What makes you happy? How can you express something you love or enjoy in your life, no matter the size of the expression or whether you’re paid for it or not? It can be a hobby. It can be (almost) anything. But, whatever it is, what action can you take toward it today? Pursuing things we love or enjoy is a key part of living our best, most fully expressed lives.
