Rukmini Vijayakumar Instagram – “Sukham stiram āsanam” is something I would constantly hear in the context of yoga. As dancers, we like to move, we like the action of motion and the idea of resting in a position is tedious when you’re a teenager.
I don’t think that I developed an individual yoga practice for a very long time. I used to enjoy being pushed to my physical limits… and didn’t really want to stay and breathe or go through the rigour of ‘staying quiet’
In the past 10 years this is the one thing that has changed for me with respect to yoga. I enjoy the quietness of it. It’s meditative in a way that demands attention.
I don’t subscribe to the idea that the physical movement of yoga has meditative benefits. But I do believe that the physical practice – if done mindfully – can force us to focus our mind.
