In 1975, Tina made her first film appearance in the almost-impossible-to-define-rock ‘n’ roll-drama ‘Tommy’, playing the audacious and erratic ‘Acid Queen’. Tina paid homage to her surreal role in the film by giving her second studio album its namesake. After the film wrapped, Tina learnt that David Bowie (one of her later collaborators) was also considered for the role!
Outside exploring the world of film, Tina began experimenting with her sound. Whilst she did not fully embrace the disco craze sweeping the era, a few disco-inspired tracks made it into her 1978 album ‘Rough’, including the funk heavy ‘Viva La Money’. As well as continuing to conquer the stage, Tina also graced more and more television screens in the late 1970s. Her performances during this era reflected her newfound control over her stage persona and evolving musical prowess.

Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Decades – 80s Part I 🎤 This decade marked a triumphant resurgence for Tina, propelling her to international stardom as a solo artist and solidifying her legacy as one of the most formidable performers in rock’n’roll history.
Her 1984 album, Private Dancer, proved to be a defining moment of Tina’s comeback. The breakthrough record included the hit single What’s Love Got to do With It, which reached the number 1 chart position in several countries and earned her three Grammy awards. Tina’s creativity was also channelled into her captivating music videos, a medium which was growing in popularity in the 1980s.
Tina also explored other creative avenues: she made another film appearance in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1983), performing two of the songs on the soundtrack, and released her biography ‘I, Tina’, in 1986. Her short, spiky hairdo also became an iconic and trendsetting hairstyle! Stay tuned for The Decades – the 80s Part II soon.
The brand new lyric video for Whole Lotta Love, the Led Zepplin classic covered by Tina and released as her first ever solo single in 1975. Tina only ever performed the song live once, and very briefly; she sang a snippet whilst introducing her band members on the final date of the 2000 TwentyFourSeven tour.
