Dan Crenshaw Instagram – A quick history lesson for your #SundayWisdom — JFK pushed a physical education program for schools called the “La Sierra System.” This was a “whole man” approach to fitness created by a WWII veteran that focused on improving strength, flexibility, endurance, and even leadership qualities. Students were taught to build strength in both their mind and bodies. A signature aspect of the La Sierra System was its use of “ability grouping” – a hierarchy of ranks based on different levels of physical fitness. In other words, it was a competition.
And workouts were extremely rigorous compared to today’s standards. To be in the top group, boys had to complete at least 12 handstand push-ups and 14 pull-ups. But here’s the thing – students WANTED to be in the top performing group. They challenged themselves to be strongest and the fastest. We need that mental fortitude back.
“This should be a matter of concern to us all. A country is only as strong as its citizens, and I think that mental and physical health, mental and physical vigor, go hand in hand.” -JFK
