Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa Instagram – Three years ago this week, my father was in Nicaragua. While my mother watched, helpless and horror-struck, he was pulled out of his car and “disappeared” by members of Ortega’s military police—illegally incarcerated in Managua’s notorious El Chipote federal prison along with over two hundred other political prisons. It was the start of a surreal, nightmarish time for my family. We all feared the worst—that we would never see him alive again. Then, a few months ago, all of the political prisoners were awoken in the middle of the night and put on a plane to Washington, DC. Free, but stripped of their Nicaraguan citizenship and personal possessions. I saw my father, briefly, when that happened—my mom was still in Nicaragua—but this last week, our entire family was finally able to reunite for the first time since this ordeal began. Eternally grateful for what can only be described as a miracle (even though Nicaragua’s political and humanitarian struggles continue). These sorts of stories rarely have happy ending.
