When I heard the AMPTP’s demand to create digital clones of us that they can then use forever without consultation or permission, I thought I must have misread it, or mixed a Black Mirror script into my newspaper. Nope. Turns out that it is exactly what it sounds like. Gizmodo: “The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is seeking to secure AI scans for Schedule F performers—guild members who earn more than the minimum for series regulars ($32,000 per TV episode) and feature films ($60,000). The companies’ suggested clause would require studios and streamers to pay to scan the likeness of Schedule F performers. SAG-AFTRA is seeking to attach a compensation for the re-use of AI scans as AMPTP member companies would also need to secure consent from the performer. The language currently in the AMPTP’s offer would see the studios and streamers secure the right to use scans of deceased performers without the consent of their estate or SAG-AFTRA.” Basically, while actors are alive there’s some consent across the board, but that ends once they have died, allowing the studios complete ownership of their likeness—which is truly some ghoulish villainy right there.” LOL WHAT? Dear #SagAftraMembers: We are thrilled and proud to tell you that today your TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee voted unanimously to approve a tentative agreement with the AMPTP. As of 12:01am PT on November 9, our strike is officially suspended and all picket locations are closed. We will be in touch in the coming days with information about celebration gatherings around the country. In a contract valued at over one billion dollars, we have achieved a deal of extraordinary scope that includes “above-pattern” minimum compensation increases, unprecedented provisions for consent and compensation that will protect members from the threat of AI, and for the first time establishes a streaming participation bonus. Our Pension & Health caps have been substantially raised, which will bring much needed value to our plans. In addition, the deal includes numerous improvements for multiple categories including outsize compensation increases for background performers, and critical contract provisions protecting diverse communities. We have arrived at a contract that will enable SAG-AFTRA members from every category to build sustainable careers. Many thousands of performers now and into the future will benefit from this work. Full details of the agreement will not be provided until the tentative agreement is reviewed by the SAG-AFTRA National Board. We also thank our union siblings — the workers that power this industry — for the sacrifices they have made while supporting our strike and that of the Writers Guild of America. We stand together in solidarity and will be there for you when you need us. Thank you all for your dedication, your commitment and your solidarity throughout this strike. Stopped at my friend’s game shop on my way to get my haircut, because I just needed to be surrounded by tabletop games and RPGs. Like the way it feels soothing and safe to be in a library? That’s how I feel when I go to Geeky Teas. I picked up a couple indie RPGs, a book for my godson, and visited with the shop cat, Mr. President, who I think I helped name forever ago. He’s a good boy who will maybe let you pet him once or throw his mouse for him, but he’s so busy keeping the shop up, he just doesn’t have time for snuggles. Anyway, last time I was in the shop, I didn’t see this sign, and because it’s something that’s become something of a catch phrase for me, I got all excited and geeked out by it. Play more games!

Earlier this year, a sunflower seed fell off the bird feeder and grew into its own flower. When it bloomed, I collected its seeds, and scattered them around my yard. Most of them grew into their own flowers, which gave me more seeds, which grew into more flowers, which gave me more seeds. One of those seeds became this gorgeous flower, which is very popular with the bees. All summer, we had beautiful flowers that brought bees and birds and butterflies into our yard, and they all came from one seed that wasn’t even planted on purpose. They are still blooming, long after I expected the growing season to end. There is a lesson there, if you’re open to it.

But it’s important to keep in mind, that if SAG-AFTRA loses the battle, particularly the battle for AI protections, the whole industry is up the creek.
