Michelle Obama Instagram - As an adult, I’ve lived in a number of places, but as far as I’m concerned, I’ve only ever had one real home. My home is my family. My home is Barack.

But here’s the thing—our marriage has never been perfectly 50-50. One of us is always needing more or giving more. We have to be willing to listen to each other, honestly and without defensiveness. Only then, can we evolve together.

Over the years, a lot of young people have asked me about marriage. And my response usually goes something like this: You have to prepare yourself for long stretches of discord and discomfort. You have to learn how to make real compromises in the way you’ve lived as an individual. Glamorizing a relationship while you’re dating will lead you straight to difficulty once you’re married. You can’t paper over problems when you’re living with someone day in and day out.

So you’ve got to ask yourself: What are you trying to get out of this relationship? Have you truly thought it through? Do you want a wedding or do you want a lifelong partnership? Those are two very different things. Together, you are answering the question: Who are we and who do we want to be?

Now I want to hear from you. What advice would you share about marriage or relationships? #TheLightWeCarry

Had so much fun on stage with @Springsteen, Patti, and Kate! 🎶
Michelle Obama Instagram - @michelleobama is at The Happy Place tomorrow!
Michelle Obama Instagram - I was heartbroken to learn about the passing of Stephen “tWitch” Boss, who I got to know over the years through my Let’s Move! initiative and visits to The Ellen Show. Stephen was an incredible force—someone who radiated kindness and positivity, and made sure that people around him could feel it, too. We felt his spirit in every dance, every DJ set, every piece of creativity that he brought to life. My heart goes out to his wife, Allison, and their three children, Weslie, Maddox, and Zaia.

And if any of you out there are struggling and need someone to talk to, please know that you are never alone. There is always someone ready to help. You can call or text the suicide and crisis hotline by dialing 988.
Michelle Obama Instagram - I hope everyone has a wonderful day filled with love, gratitude, and a whole lot of great food. From our family to yours, have a happy Thanksgiving!
Michelle Obama Instagram - After tonight’s debate there should be no doubt – no room for discussion – @KamalaHarris is the only candidate in this race who is ready to be President.

I am once again urging everyone to roll up their sleeves and DO SOMETHING – phone bank, knock on doors, talk to any and everyone you know and urge them to vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Every vote will matter in what will be a close race. We cannot afford to have anyone sitting on the sidelines. There’s simply too much at stake.

Get involved today at go.KamalaHarris.com.
Michelle Obama Instagram - We’re fired up and ready to go! Let’s do all we can to elect @KamalaHarris and @TimWalz. Join us: KamalaHarris.com
Michelle Obama Instagram - If I make it to 100, I hope I look as good as you, Eloise. So great meeting you and your family in Philly. ❤️
Michelle Obama Instagram - @KamalaHarris is ready for this moment. By every measure, she will be one of the most qualified people ever to seek the presidency. And by every measure, she will be one of the most dignified.

Her story is your story. It’s my story. It’s the story of the vast majority of Americans trying to build a better life. She knows, like we do, that regardless of where you come from, what you look like, who you love, how you worship, or what’s in your bank account, we all deserve the opportunity to build a decent life. All of our contributions deserve to be accepted and valued. Because no one has a monopoly on what it means to be an American!

Let’s usher in a new era of decency and light as we elect the next President and Vice President of the United States–@KamalaHarris and @TimWalz!
Michelle Obama Instagram - I was touched to see Gus Walz’s joy when his dad @TimWalz took the stage last night. Thankful for you showing us all what real love looks like, Gus.

Let’s be a nation that embraces this kind of warmth and vulnerability, instead of making fun or mocking it. We could all use some of Gus’s example in our own lives.
Michelle Obama Instagram - Today would have been my mom’s 87th birthday. These past couple of months have been tough without her, and I am so grateful for the outpouring of love you’ve shown our family along the way. Even though she’s no longer with us, I still think she’s worth celebrating.

What I loved most about my mom might have been this: She always felt like she was enough. The tiny two bedroom walk-up apartment we used to live in; the faux chimney she would fashion for us out of cardboard during the holidays; the at-home hair-dos she would give herself using the oven and a hot comb — she was always happy with what she had.

And because she felt like she was enough, she could help others feel that too. She did that countless times for me and my brother Craig. She did it for her family and friends. She did it for the staff at the White House. She did it for everyone she knew.

So today, on her birthday, I am celebrating the immense power there was in her enoughness. And I am committing myself to carrying forward her legacy of lifting up others the best I can.

Love you, mom. And happy birthday.
Michelle Obama Instagram - I will miss my friend, Tafari...the emptiness is hard. But I promise to stay strong, keep living, and honor your legacy in every way possible. Rest in peace, my brother.

Michelle Obama Instagram - If there’s one person I can always count on, it’s you, @BarackObama. You’re my rock. Always have been. Always will be. Happy Valentine’s Day, honey! ❤️
Michelle Obama Instagram - Happy Father’s Day to all of the amazing dads out there — and to this guy in particular. @BarackObama, thank you for being such a loving, caring, and attentive dad to our two beautiful girls. We love you so much! 💕
Michelle Obama Instagram - It was so wonderful to see @MindyKaling honored with the National Medal of Arts by President Biden this week for her trailblazing work across television, film, and books.

In #TheLightWeCarry, I write about Mindy in a chapter that explores the feeling of being an “other” or an “only” that many of us experience. Sometimes it's because of our race or ethnicity; other times it’s our gender; for me growing up, it was my height. Whatever the reason, those differences that make us stand out and often lead us to shrink ourselves.

When Mindy started on The Office, she was twenty-four-years old and the only woman and person of color writing on the show. Now, Mindy could have decided to let those feelings of doubt take over, but she didn’t. She stepped forward. She endured the discomfort of being an “only,” drilled down on the work, and because of that—she was able to make more space for others coming up behind her, creating room for more storytellers and more stories along the way.

Since then, she’s become a powerhouse in her field, creating, producing, writing, and starring in multiple hit TV shows and movies, nearly all of which feature the stories of women of color. With her work, she’s widened the sphere for belonging and empowering so many women along the way by allowing themselves to be seen. Congrats on the award, Mindy! You deserve it. #WomensHistoryMonth

Michelle Obama Instagram - Every time I tell people how much I love to knit, they seem so surprised! But it truly has become one of my most meaningful (and fun) pastimes.

For me, knitting is a release. It lets my hands lead the way as my mind trails behind. And it turns out that knitting was buried in my DNA–I am the descendant of many seamstresses. My mom shared with me that every woman on her side of the family learned how to work a needle and thread, to sew, crochet, and knit.

During the peak of the pandemic, when everything felt so bleak, the act of stitching, purling, casting on and off is how I kept my anxiety at bay. Practicing it roots me in this idea that I talk about in my book, The Light We Carry called “the power of small.” It’s the idea that narrowing your focus into a small, seemingly insignificant task can remind us of our own agency. It shows us our own ability to build, create, and succeed. I truly believe that when you know you are capable of small tasks, it makes the bigger ones feel easier. In this case, every small stitch builds into a bigger purpose.

What’s something that you’ve picked up as a hobby or practice that has helped you during these last few years? I’d love to hear from you in the comments. And if you have some photos, tag me in your post using #TheLightWeCarry. 🧶

Michelle Obama Instagram - Here’s to @BillieJeanKing and all the changemakers who broke barriers and opened doors for future generations—and to the @USOpen for raising the bar not just for the tennis world, but for the entire world. 🎾
Michelle Obama Instagram - Happy birthday to my baby girl! Sasha, you bring so much light and joy to our lives—always have, always will. I’m so excited to see what this new year will bring you. Love you so much! 💕
Michelle Obama Instagram - San Francisco, are you ready? Conan (@teamcoco) and I are so pumped for tonight’s #TheLightWeCarry show.
Michelle Obama Instagram - I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by relatives—grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, and more—with stories to tell and a willingness to share them. Over the years, through these conversations, I learned that I was the descendant of slaves—my grandfather’s grandmother lived her life in bondage.

Discovering that slavery was a part of my family’s story was painful and sobering. Like many African Americans, reflecting on this dark part of our history is never comfortable. And it still opens up wounds that many of us still aren’t ready to deal with just yet.

But to this day, I am so grateful for the chance to hear about my ancestors. Because despite how difficult it was to hear some of them, it helped me develop a greater sense of self—and gave me motivation to keep going, work my hardest, and be the best that I could be. I want my story to honor theirs. I want to make the most of my opportunities when so many who came before me had so few.

And that’s why the film Descendant on Netflix means so much to me. It comes from our production company, @HigherGroundMedia, and it tells the story of the descendants of the survivors of the Clotilda, which is believed to be the last ship that carried enslaved Africans to the United States. To me, the film is about navigating the delicate parts of our history—and the power that comes from learning about the people who came before you. It’s about reclaiming our stories—and owning them for ourselves.

Have you had a chance to check it out? Did it make you reflect about your own ancestry, too? I’d love to know if there is an ancestor of yours who has influenced your life. Tell me more in the comments and join the Descendant Challenge by sharing photos and more about your family history using the hashtag #DescendantChallenge. I wanted to share these photos of various members of my family with all of you. I can't wait to hear about your story, too.

Michelle Obama Instagram - A few weeks ago, I launched The Light Podcast to share the engaging and meaningful conversations from The Light We Carry book tour with listeners worldwide. At the heart of this series is the belief that we all possess a warmth within us that, when shared honestly and vulnerably, has the power to light up our lives, our communities, and the world. I am so grateful to everyone who has listened so far and shared their reflections. I also want to thank @Starbucks and @Intuit for their support of #TheLightPodcast. I can’t wait for everyone to hear the rest of the season!
Michelle Obama Instagram - Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service always inspires me.

This #MLKDay, I hope you’ll join me and @WhenWeAllVote in honoring Dr. King’s life and legacy by getting involved in your community. Whether you’re mentoring students at your local school or volunteering for a cause that matters to you, it all helps make a difference. Tell me how you’re giving back today in the comments.

Michelle Obama Instagram - In knitting, when you create the first stitch of a new project, you cast on. When an item is finished, you bind off. Both of these actions, I've found, are incredibly satisfying bookends of something manageable and finite.

Knitting has truly become one of my favorite pastimes, and I’ve enjoyed the feeling of slowing down and creating something from hand. I know so many of you are knitters – I’d love to see something you’ve proudly made and hear why you enjoy knitting so much. Use #TheLightWeCarry so I can see your posts! 🧶

Michelle Obama Instagram - I never could have imagined that the phrase “when they go low, we go high” would become synonymous with my name. So, over the six years since I said those words at the Democratic National Convention, I’ve had a lot of time to reflect about the concept more broadly. And in The Light We Carry, I wrote about it.

For a long time, “going high” was a simple mantra that Barack and I used to encourage each other. It was a simplification of our ideals, everything we’d gleaned from our upbringings that had been simmered into us over time: Tell the truth, do your best by others, keep perspective, and find a way to stay tough through it all.

And let’s be clear: Going high doesn’t mean doing nothing. It’s not disengagement or simply turning the other cheek. It’s about making your work count and your voice heard in a way that’s authentic to you and constructive for others. It’s about making sure your commitment to dignity and decency lights the way in everything you do—how you treat others, how you show up in the world, how you respond when your back’s against a wall.

So as we wrap up this year and look to the start of a new one, let’s remember the power that lies in our words and our actions. Some folks are always going to try to bring us down. But the moment we stoop down to their level? That’s the moment we surrender our power to them. So for me, even when it’s hard, even when we don’t feel like we want to, going high will always be the answer. #TheLightWeCarry

Michelle Obama Instagram - Like Vice President Harris, Governor @TimWalz believes that government works to serve us. Not just some of us, but all of us. That’s what makes him an outstanding governor, and that’s what will make him an even better vice president. Michelle and I couldn’t be happier for Tim and Gwen, their family, and our country.
Michelle Obama Instagram - Black History Month is a time to celebrate the Black folks who fought and struggled for our rights and our freedoms to help shape our country. Our ancestors have been a vital part of America’s story since the very beginning — and this month is a time to honor our stories and journeys. Over the next four weeks, I’ll be lifting up Black artists, organizations, and more who have left an indelible mark on our country. I hope you’ll join me in celebrating our history.
Michelle Obama Instagram - It’s up to us to remember what Kamala’s mother told her: Don’t just sit around and complain — do something!

We only have two and a half months left until Election Day.

So, let’s get to work!
Michelle Obama Instagram - This #Thanksgiving, we have a lot to be grateful for — our families, our health, and so much more. As we gather together today, let’s also give thanks to all those who bravely serve our country far from their homes and families. Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Michelle Obama Instagram - Wishing Rosalynn Carter a wonderful 96th birthday! You’ve been a source of inspiration for so many people around the world, including me. Thank you so much for your service to our country.

Michelle Obama Instagram - Happy Mother’s Day! 💕

Being a mom to Malia and Sasha has been the greatest gift of my life, and I am forever grateful to my mom for teaching me the importance of courage, empathy, and hard work—lessons that I’ve passed down to my own girls.

To all the moms out there, I hope you continue to kindle and nurture your bright light. Have a wonderful day.

Michelle Obama Instagram - Happy World Book Day! I had so much fun surprising some unexpected readers with @JimmyFallon at @McNallyJackson Bookstore in NYC. Take a look! 📚
Michelle Obama Instagram - Happy Valentine’s Day, @BarackObama! Every year with you gets better and better. ❤️😘
Michelle Obama Instagram - Recently, I sat down with @JayShetty to talk about some of the themes I explore in my book The Light We Carry. From the importance of friendships to the ongoing work of marriage to taking care of your mental health, we covered it all.

Nurturing my friendships is something that has always meant a lot to me. No matter your age or where you are in life, knowing which friends to lean on can be vital in helping us face the challenges that may come our way.

I dig into all this and more with Jay during this episode of On Purpose — listen now on @Audible or wherever you get your podcasts! I hope you’ll check it out.
Michelle Obama Instagram - I’m so moved by all of your thoughtful reflections in response to my post about knitting. In my book, The Light We Carry, I talk about how knitting has helped me learn so much about myself and stay grounded in a world full of big challenges. I often refer to this idea as “the power of small.”

Over the past couple of years, I’ve knitted tops for my daughters, a sweater for Barack, and more. Here’s a photo of one of the first baby sweaters that I knitted for a friend. I’ve really grown to love spending time crafting something with my own hands—and, once it’s complete, seeing the joy spread across their face.

What’s something you’ve made that’s given you the same feeling? #TheLightWeCarry
Michelle Obama Instagram - Right now, there are important elections happening in states like GA, OH, MS, NC, VA, PA, TX, FL, NJ, CO, and MI. There are also important local level races in other states across the country. If there’s an election in your state, I want to make sure you have a plan to vote. When you cast your ballot, you’ll have the power to elect the representatives who will determine everything from funding for our schools, to enacting criminal justice reform, to protecting reproductive rights, and so much more.

This #VoteEarlyDay, head to @WhenWeAllVote’s Voter Hub at the link in my bio to make a plan to vote early and find out what’s on your ballot ahead of time. Then, text three friends or family members and ask them to join your #VotingSquad so you can all vote together.

When we organize, mobilize, show up and vote, we can make real change and create a better future for us all. 🗳️
Michelle Obama Instagram - You learn very quickly that there is no handbook or rules to being First Lady. Technically, it’s not even an official position. And while there are spoken and unspoken expectations that provide some structure, the role is largely shaped by the passions and aspirations of the person holding it.

First Lady Rosalynn Carter understood that well.

Guided by her abiding faith and her commitment to service, Mrs. Carter used her platform in profoundly meaningful ways. Her groundbreaking work to combat the stigma faced by those struggling with their mental health brought light to so many suffering in silence. She advocated for better care for the elderly. She advanced women’s rights. And she remained a champion for those causes — and many others like building affordable housing for those in need and caring for our nation’s caregivers — in the more than four decades that followed.

When our family was in the White House, every so often, Rosalynn would join me for lunch, offering a few words of advice and always — always — a helping hand. She reminded me to make the role of First Lady my own, just like she did. I’ll always remain grateful for her support and her generosity.

Today, Barack and I join the world in celebrating the remarkable legacy of a First Lady, philanthropist, and advocate who dedicated her life to lifting up others. Her life is a reminder that no matter who we are, our legacies are best measured not in awards or accolades, but in the lives we touch. We send our thoughts and prayers to Jimmy and the entire Carter family during this difficult time.

Michelle Obama Instagram - What an inspiring and historic night — a true representation of what it means to be an American. @KamalaHarris delivered an impassioned and powerful speech tonight that showed the country and the world that she is ready to lead us forward.

She did her part with grace, strength, and determination. And now, it’s up to us, regardless of how we identify politically, to do the same. Each of us must do what we know in our hearts is right.

We must vote like our lives depend on it. We must rally our neighbors and communities. And we must start now. Don’t wait. We can’t let this momentum die down.

Because there is only one choice for us in this election — and that is the next President of the United States, Kamala Harris!
Michelle Obama Instagram - Philadelphia! Thank you to everybody who joined @GayleKing and me last night on tour. It meant a lot to talk about the tools and techniques I use to overcome amid times of uncertainty—and now I want to hear from you, too. Tell me what you do to stay balanced in the comments. #TheLightWeCarry
Michelle Obama Instagram - Growing up, my dad used to tell me and my brother Craig that “no one can make you feel bad if you feel good about yourself.” It’s a lesson I’ve carried with me to this day.

No matter where you are on your journey, there are folks out there who may make you feel othered. But I want to remind you that so often, what you perceive as your differences — are actually your strengths — and in many ways, they are the source code to your successes.

This is one of the lessons I share in my new workbook, Overcoming, which is available now at michelleobamabooks.com or at your local bookstore.
Michelle Obama Instagram - So proud of you, @CocoGauff! Your hard work and grit was on display throughout this tournament. This is your moment! 👏🏾
Michelle Obama Instagram - To all our Obama alumni who joined Barack and me in Chicago, as well as all those who couldn’t make it, I just want to say thank you for everything you have done over the past 15 years—not just for me, not just for Barack, but for our country and our world.

You’ve shown us what’s possible when you get involved not just in spite of the scale of the challenge, but because of it. You’ve shown us change is possible—and that our hopes are more powerful than our fears. And in the years that have followed since Election Night in Grant Park, you’ve proven that again and again and again.
Michelle Obama Instagram - @AliciaKeys, you’ve done it again! I absolutely loved every second of @HellsKitchenBway and found myself singing and dancing the entire night. I know how hard you worked to bring this production to life, and I could feel your creativity and light shining all the way through. You and the cast should feel so proud! ❤️

Michelle Obama Instagram - For a long time, Toni Morrison has served as an inspiration for both Barack and me. We had a chance to celebrate her in 2012 when Barack named her as one of the recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of our nation’s highest honors.

And in chapter three of my book #TheLightWeCarry, I share a powerful parenting lesson from her about greeting children with gladness, lighting up for them when they walk into a room, and showing them that they are enough just the way they are. It's a lesson that resonates deeply with me, because it's how my own mother treated me and something I later tried to apply to my own girls.

That’s Toni Morrison for you. Whether she’s moving you with the written word or sharing lessons from her own life, she had a way of uncovering the beauty that was always there. Even though she's gone, we're all so lucky that her wisdom will always be with us. #BlackHistoryMonth
Michelle Obama Instagram - Merry Christmas! One of the best parts of the holiday season is spending time with our loved ones and giving thanks for all of life’s blessings. Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy start to the new year.
Michelle Obama Instagram - While in Denver, I stopped by the @tatteredcoverbookstore and signed some copies of The Light We Carry. I’ve enjoyed doing these surprise bookstore visits throughout the year – and this time I decided to bring some folks from my team along with me!

Which bookstore should I stop by next? Tag them below. 📚
Michelle Obama Instagram - Happy Community College Month! 🎓

I want to celebrate every student who is continuing their education at a community college this year.

I hope you’re proud of the commitment you’re making to yourself, your family, and your future—because I certainly am. #ReachHigher
Michelle Obama Instagram - Today is a day of reflection and most of all, remembrance, for those we lost on September 11. May we never forget to tell their stories and honor their legacies.
Michelle Obama Instagram - We are just 100 days away from Election Day, and it’s time to get registered and ready to vote.

When we all vote, we have the power to determine the direction of our country.

Every issue we care about is on the ballot — from reproductive rights to what our kids are learning in school to how our communities are policed.

Our democracy works best when all of us play a role in shaping it. So, tell me — are you voting this year?

Head over to @whenweallvote to register to vote today. And don’t forget to remind your friends and family to register, too.

Let’s get out there and do this!

Michelle Obama Instagram - When I first wrote #TheLightWeCarry, my hope was this book would help start conversations and inspire people to think of the tools they need to navigate life during times of uncertainty.

I was thrilled to sit down with some inspiring women— @AngieMartinez, @KellyRowland, @MsTinaLawson, @WinnieHarlow and @HerMusicOfficial—to discuss themes in my book including everything from overcoming our fears, marriage, parenting and so much more.

Watch the special conversation tonight at 8pm ET on @REVOLTtv.
Michelle Obama - 5.9 Million Likes - As an adult, I’ve lived in a number of places, but as far as I’m concerned, I’ve only ever had one real home.

Michelle Obama - 1.6 Million Likes - I was heartbroken to learn about the passing of Stephen “tWitch” Boss, who I got to know over the years through my Let’s Move! initiative and visits to The Ellen Show.

Michelle Obama - 1.5 Million Likes - After tonight’s debate there should be no doubt – no room for discussion – @KamalaHarris is the only candidate in this race who is ready to be President.

Michelle Obama - 1.1 Million Likes - @KamalaHarris is ready for this moment.

Michelle Obama - 1.1 Million Likes - Today would have been my mom’s 87th birthday.

Michelle Obama - 868.1K Likes - It was so wonderful to see @MindyKaling honored with the National Medal of Arts by President Biden this week for her trailblazing work across television, film, and books.

In #TheLightWeCarry, I write about Mindy in a chapter that explores the feeling of being an “other” or an “only” that many of us experience. Sometimes it’s because of our race or ethnicity; other times it’s our gender; for me growing up, it was my height.

Michelle Obama - 574.9K Likes - Every time I tell people how much I love to knit, they seem so surprised!

Michelle Obama - 392.5K Likes - I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by relatives—grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, and more—with stories to tell and a willingness to share them.

I can’t wait to hear about your story, too.

Michelle Obama - 392.5K Likes - I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by relatives—grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, and more—with stories to tell and a willingness to share them. Over the years, through these conversations, I learned that I was the descendant of slaves—my grandfather’s grandmother lived her life in bondage.

I am so grateful to everyone who has listened so far and shared their reflections. I also want to thank @Starbucks and @Intuit for their support of #TheLightPodcast. 🧶

Michelle Obama - 362.7K Likes - I never could have imagined that the phrase “when they go low, we go high” would become synonymous with my name.

Michelle Obama - 280.7K Likes - I’m so moved by all of your thoughtful reflections in response to my post about knitting.

Michelle Obama - 273.7K Likes - You learn very quickly that there is no handbook or rules to being First Lady.

Michelle Obama - 272.1K Likes - When I sat down to write #TheLightWeCarry, my hope was this book would provide readers with the tools, practices, and attitudes that will help them on their own journeys. And these were exactly the kind of conversations I loved sharing on The Light Podcast with some of my closest friends.

To those of you who have listened to The Light Podcast, I just wanted to say thank you. It has meant so much to hear your reflections—and I hope you found these conversations to be useful for your own life.

To those who haven’t had the chance to listen yet, I’m excited to announce that all episodes of The Light Podcast are now available wherever you listen to your podcasts. Let me know what you think of it when you finish!

Michelle Obama - 271.4K Likes - What an inspiring and historic night — a true representation of what it means to be an American.

Michelle Obama - 268.2K Likes - Growing up, my dad used to tell me and my brother Craig that “no one can make you feel bad if you feel good about yourself.” It’s a lesson I’ve carried with me to this day.

You’ve shown us what’s possible when you get involved not just in spite of the scale of the challenge, but because of it. You’ve shown us change is possible—and that our hopes are more powerful than our fears. And in the years that have followed since Election Night in Grant Park, you’ve proven that again and again and again.

Michelle Obama - 242.4K Likes - For a long time, Toni Morrison has served as an inspiration for both Barack and me.
