President Carter taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from this remarkable man.

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service always inspires me. This #MLKDay, I hope you’ll join me and @WhenWeAllVote in honoring Dr. King’s life and legacy by getting involved in your community. Whether you’re mentoring students at your local school or volunteering for a cause that matters to you, it all helps make a difference. Tell me how you’re giving back today in the comments.
Black History Month is a time to celebrate the Black folks who fought and struggled for our rights and our freedoms to help shape our country. Our ancestors have been a vital part of America’s story since the very beginning — and this month is a time to honor our stories and journeys. Over the next four weeks, I’ll be lifting up Black artists, organizations, and more who have left an indelible mark on our country. I hope you’ll join me in celebrating our history.
Growing up, my dad used to tell me and my brother Craig that “no one can make you feel bad if you feel good about yourself.” It’s a lesson I’ve carried with me to this day. No matter where you are on your journey, there are folks out there who may make you feel othered. But I want to remind you that so often, what you perceive as your differences — are actually your strengths — and in many ways, they are the source code to your successes. This is one of the lessons I share in my new workbook, Overcoming, which is available now at michelleobamabooks.com or at your local bookstore.
Merry Christmas! One of the best parts of the holiday season is spending time with our loved ones and giving thanks for all of life’s blessings. Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy start to the new year.
I had such a wonderful time catching up with @IAmJHud on the @JenniferHudsonShow talking about two projects that are really important to me — @HigherGroundMedia’s The Later Daters and the Overcoming Workbook. I started working on these projects a couple of years ago, and I hope you’ll check them out. If you’ve started watching The Later Daters on Netflix or flipping through the Overcoming Workbook, let me know what you think! I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. 💗

Fifteen years ago when I was First Lady, Partnership for a Healthier America was founded to improve the health of children in our country alongside my Let’s Move! initiative. We wanted to create a movement that made healthy eating and physical activity the norm — making sure fruits and vegetables were accessible while showing our kids examples of ways they could stay active. I’ll always be proud of the work we were able to accomplish. We improved the federal school nutrition standards, garnered meaningful commitments from food companies and restaurant chains to lower calories, salt, sugar, and trans fat in their products, modernized the Nutrition Facts label to help give families the information they needed, and empowered parents and caregivers with tools to support themselves and their families. Today, Partnership for a Healthier America’s mission has evolved to advancing access to good food for everyone in America. In the past few years, we’ve distributed over 1 million meals to families in need through our Pass the Love campaign with Waffles Mochi. But there is still a lot more work to do—because, frankly, our kids deserve better. If you’re interested in learning how you can get involved, follow @PHAnews for more information.

We’re thinking of everyone impacted by the California fires, and are grateful for the firefighters, first responders, and community members who have been doing all they can to meet this moment. One of those leaders is Royal Ramey, who participated in our @ObamaFoundation Leaders USA program, and is the co-founder and CEO of the Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program (FFRP). Royal and his team at @ffrp_ca have helped more than 300 formerly incarcerated individuals gain the training they need to become employed as firefighters. He says FFRP aims to help, “break cycles, create opportunities, and protect communities.” Today many of these firefighters are helping take out the California fires, and we are thankful for their heroic work.
Each and every day, school counselors are there for our students — offering wisdom, helping plan futures, and giving them the support they need to pursue their dreams. Some days, they are helping first generation students get into college. Other days, they’re helping push them to imagine the kind of person they want to be. But most days, their critical work goes unnoticed. That’s why @ReachHigher and @WeAreASCA are making sure our nation’s school counselors get the shine they deserve. Thank you to every school counselor out there for giving it your all every single day. We see you and appreciate all that you do for our nation’s students.
I know it’s been a difficult few months for so many of us — and folks are feeling a little bit anxious and uncertain. But this holiday season, there are plenty of reasons to stay hopeful. So as 2024 comes to a close, I wanted to share some reflections on the work the @ObamaFoundation is doing to lift up the young changemakers around the world. Take a look.
When you’re a leader, having a network to support you can make all the difference. That’s why we developed the Leaders program at the @ObamaFoundation — to help changemakers bolster their network and foster connections all over the globe. If you’re an ambitious young person who is looking for ways to collaborate and connect with others, I invite you to apply. We’re accepting applications for the Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and United States cohorts until January 5, 2025. Learn more about the program and apply at the link in my bio.

With so many heartbreaking conflicts and crises happening all around the world, the need to invest in adolescent girls could not be more critical. We know that these girls are the key to stronger families, communities, and countries. But war, democratic backsliding, and climate disasters are jeopardizing girls’ health and safety—and threatening to undermine progress toward gender equality. That’s why I’m so proud that today, the Girls Opportunity Alliance is committing $1 million in support of girls who are disproportionately impacted by global conflict and crises. In collaboration with CARE, Plan International, Save the Children, and UNICEF USA, we are supporting efforts to invest in girls affected by crises in places such as Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Gaza, Haiti, Lebanon, Nigeria, Sudan, and Ukraine. These organizations will provide vital humanitarian support and enable girls to continue learning despite their challenging circumstances. We hope you’ll read more at the link in our bio and join us in supporting these girls.
These days, it’s important to remember that change often begins in our local communities. That’s why I wanted to spotlight the incredible work the organizations in our @GirlsOpportunityAlliance Network are doing to uplift girls in my hometown. We recently gathered more than 80 of those Chicago leaders—all working to empower girls through the arts, sports, education, and more—to exchange ideas and learn from each other. This community always reminds me of the strength we have when we come together to support one another. Take a look at this video to learn more about the impact of the Girls Opportunity Alliance in Chicago, and join us in supporting their work by visiting the link in my bio.
