A few weeks ago, I had the absolute pleasure of teaching 50 incredible humans in Santa Maria, CA. The students of Pioneer Valley High School and their theatre teacher @selynharwin could not have been more welcoming, daring, connected, open, trusting, or talented. After I led them through warms ups (inspired by @therealalexandrabillings @emilystellafletcher and @zivameditation) I had the privilege of coaching them on songs and monologues. These young actors were tacking big, rich, mature material: “Being Alive” from COMPANY, “She Used To Be Mine” from WAITRESS, “Roxie” and “When You’re Good to Mama” (from their upcoming production of CHICAGO) and knocking every song out of the proverbial park. Perhaps my favorite moment of the day was one student who sang “This is Me” from THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. He was a bit timid out of the gate, but then he opened up about how he plays sports, but he feels his true spirit come alive when in the presence of his theatre community. I asked him to sing the song again – this time to his parents and football coach. He dug deep, accepted the challenge, and blossomed right before our eyes. As he sang, his body and his purpose came online, and suddenly all 50 kids were waving their phone flashlights from the audience like he was headlining a rock concert. Tears were streaming. It was one of those breakthrough moments every mentor and student dreams of and I’ll never forget it. Risks were being taken. Habits were being broken. “Ah-ha!” revelations were being made. We were all having so much fun that I stayed way past my scheduled 2 hours, and I got to cap off the day with a song. It was a joyous, rewarding, celebratory afternoon that reminded us all of the importance of art, connection, storytelling, truth, craft, and the sense of community that only theatre can provide. I am forever changed. Thank you @broadwayplus @selynharwin @pioneervalley @righettihs @righettidramaclub and the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District Career Technical Education theater students. 📸 @rdelapena.photos @santa_maria_times

At 8:30pm I got an offer to star in the hit off-Broadway show, HYPROV. I was being asked to step in for “international improv comedy superstar” Colin Mochrie (from “Whose Line is it Anyway”) – I am many things but “international improv comedy superstar” is not necessarily one of them. This felt like the wrong match. But earlier that very day, I had a long, passionate conversation about wanting, no, NEEDING to be back in a theatre, and now, BAM!, I had in my lap, a golden opportunity to do just that. I took a deep breath and in true clichéd improv comedy fashion, said, “YES, AND.” I packed like a Tasmanian devil, slept for ONE hour, flew to New York in a middle seat, showered, and rehearsed onstage for a whopping 30 minutes. I was nervous, delirious, unprepared and barely alive. But as I hit the stage to make my improv comedy debut, this “wrong match” was suddenly right. I could feel myself releasing the grips and squirms of my uncertainty, my discomfort, my fear to find a juicy adrenaline rush of delicious, playful, “YES, AND” energy waiting for me on the other side. I encourage you to join me in this timeless tradition and say, “YES, AND” to HYPROV. Reviews are amazing, the audiences go absolutely nuts for it, and I’m here in a theatre doing what I NEED to do. 2 shows down. 3 to go. Maybe more… Colin Mochrie, I wish you a speedy recovery. But until then, I’m gonna “Yes, and” this shit outta this play. And continue to, “Yes, and” the shit outta my life.
I am completely engulfed in this scintillating, eye-opening, and beautifully written book authored by my brilliant sister-in-law, @candidamoss. GOD’S GHOSTWRITERS: Enslaved Christians and the Making of the Bible – is her 7th book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in hidden history, social justice, and, well, all those guys out there who think about the Roman Empire multiple times a week. Seriously, get yourself a copy. I’m usually more of a fiction reader, but I cannot put this down! #godsghostwriters
